Luke Donald could round off a fantastic year by winning the Tour Championship at the East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta this week. The Englishman starts as hot favourite for the tournament that marks the final round of the FedEx Cup play-offs on the PGA Tour as William Hill make him the 13/2 favourite in the ante-post odds.
There is plenty at stake as the tournament carries an $8m prize purse and only the top 30 players from the FedEx Cup rankings are in attendance. Donald though has a fine record at East Lake and even at such a short price it is tough to look anywhere else.
The world number one finished second here last year as he finished just a shot behind an inspired Jim Furyk. Donald had opened the tournament with two rounds of 66 and if his recent form is anything to go by he could be on the verge of something similar this week. Donald has finished in the top 20 in each of his last six outings, including a tied third at the Deutsche Bank Championship.
He came fourth at the BMW Championship last week and arrives in Atlanta in hot form after hitting a final round 68 on Sunday.
Donald is very much the man to beat but Webb Simpson can lay claim to some excellent recent form as well. The American was fifth at the BMW last week but his last four outings have seen him win the Wyndham and the Deutsche Bank Championships, and he looks tough to back against at odds of 10/1 with Hills on his first appearance at East Lake.
The next best in the odds is 2006 winner Adam Scott and the advantage of having won here before cannot be underestimated. The WGC-Bridgestone Invitational winner has finished in the top ten in four of his last seven events and the US Masters runner-up can be backed at tempting odds of 14/1.
Elsewhere, Nick Watney was tied fourth at East Lake last year and has picked up four top 25 finishes in his last five events, although whether he has what it takes to kick on and claim the title remains to be seen.
Watney is a 16/1 punt with Hills, as is Dustin Johnson, who despite winning the Barclays has been on an indifferent run of form. The big-hitting American has a T48, MC, T42 and T65 from four of his last five events and his form at East Lake makes him very tough to back - tied 22nd last year and 27th in 2009.
Matt Kuchar is also priced 16/1 after finishing tied 25th last year and that could be the extent of his ambitions again after notching five consecutive top 25 finishes recently.
Of more interest could be Phil Mickelson at 20/1 with WilliamHill.com as the American is a two-time winner of the Tour Championship and his knowledge of conditions could prove invaluable. He was tied third here in 2008 as well and could offer some each-way value.
Meanwhile, Justin Rose secured his place in the top 30 of the FedEx rankings by winning the BMW last week, which was his third career title, and he is a 20/1 punt to secure successive titles.
