This week's Canadian Open is held at the Shaughnessy Golf and Country Club for the first time since 2005 as the course celebrates its 100th anniversary this week. Boylesports price Luke Donald as a short odds favourite at 8/1 as he looks to bounce back from his British Open disappointment, with a host of other plays from Sandwich making the trip across to Vancouver.
Things are unlikely to get any easier for those players after they had to endure horrendous weather conditions at Royal St George's. The course at Shaughnessy is rated by many as the most difficult non-major course and when the Canadian Open was last held here in 2005 only eight players finished the tournament under par.
World number one Donald looks well suited to this course and his missed cut at the British Open was only his second of the season. The Englishman has been in fine fettle away from the majors though as he has eleven top tens this year, including a win in the Scottish Open a couple of weeks ago. At 8/1 though he looks far too short and there should be better value elsewhere.
World number six Matt Kuchar is next best in the odds at 12/1 after his missed cut at the British Open ended a run of 29 consecutive cuts made. He has eight top tens in sixteen and tied for fourteenth here in 2005.
US Masters champion Charl Schwartzel has excelled whenever he has played on the PGA Tour this year, not least when notching a top ten finish at the US Open. Schwartzel makes his first appearance in the Canadian Open after finishing tied sixteenth in the British Open, his seventh top 25 appearance of the year. We fancy he should be right in the mix this week as he is yet to miss a cut this season and could return some good value from 16/1.
Also at 16/1 is Rickie Fowler, who impressed all with the way he coped and seemed to thrive in difficult conditions at Sandwich last week. Fowler is still searching for that elusive first tour win but it is surely not far away, particularly as he arrives in good form after finishing tied thirteenth in the AT&T National recently. His putting is much improved but still needs a little more, and it could be a 22/1 shot that offers the pick this week.
That 22/1 shot with Boylesports.com comes in the form of Ryan Moore, who can boast both fine recent form and course form. He finished tied second at the Travelers and an admirable 28th at the Open Championship, and it is well worth noting that he was runner up at Shaughnessy Golf and Country Club in 2005. He lost out in a play-off to Mark Calcavecchia six years ago but could go one better, particularly as he should excel on a course that is so similar to the TPC River Highlands, where he was runner up in June.
