Eight of the world’s top 14 players converge on the Abu Dhabi golf course this week for what would appear to be proof that the tournament has become one of the must-play events on the ‘Road to Dubai’. World number 4 and winner of the ‘Road to Dubai’ in 2009 Lee Westwood will lead the way and will be hoping to get his new year off in the same style with which he finished 2009. Westwood is one of three players vying for favouritism to win the event, along with world number 9, Geoff Ogilvy and world number 10, Rory McIlroy. All three can be backed at 12/1 with Bet365
Also in the field are reigning Abu Dhabi champion Paul Casey, world number 7 Henrik Stenson, as well as Sergio Garcia, who will be looking to get back into the world’s top ten after slipping to 13th after failing to win an event in 2009.
Punters should note that the tournament has become a particular favourite for Casey, who has won it twice and who obviously plays this course extremely well. Others who have shone here are the young German Martin Kaymer, who won in 2008 and Swede Henrik Stenson, who although is yet to win has always been close up.
For our money we think that the winner is likely to come from one of the top players. We like Casey, Westwood and Stenson for this, but the bet we think to be on is that of Sergio Garcia, who has been working extremely hard pre-season to get his game together and who is ready for a big year. The Spaniard has great odds of 25/1 with VC Bet and should be backed on an each way basis.
12/1 Ogilvy
12/1 Westwood
12/1 McIlroy
14/1 Kaymer
14/1 Casey
16/1 Stenson
22/1 Garcia
22/1 Ian Poulter
28/1 Anthony Kim
30/1 Camillo Villegas
40/1 BAR.
