Marc Leishman tipped up in the Rest of the World market at 2017 Open Championship

The eagerly anticipated 2017 Open Championship gets underway at Royal Birkdale on Thursday and it’s difficult to remember a major being so open, with no clear favourite in the betting. But, have no fear, as the Rest of the World market is always a popular one at golf tournaments and The 146th Open is no exception, with value to be found.

Stat Attack

  • Marc Leishman has three top-5 finishes at major tournaments.
  • Two of those were a The Open: T5 in 2014 & T2 in 2015.
  • The Australian won the Arnold Palmer Invitational in March.

World No.2 Hideki Matsuyama has been in superb form this season and it’s no surprise to see the Japanese superstar top the Rest of the World betting at 5/1 with Betfred. The 25-year-old is bidding to become the first of his countrymen to strike gold at the majors, and he certainly has the game to thrive at Royal Birkdale.

Next up in the betting is the Australian duo of Adam Scott (7/1) and Jason Day (8/1), winners of The Masters and PGA Championship respectively. Then in hot pursuit is South African Louis Oosthuizen (11/1), who lifted the Claret Jug back in 2010 at St Andrews, and his compatriot Branden Grace (12/1).

However, while you could make a solid case for each of the above five players, I’m opting for the third Aussie on this list, Marc Leishman (12/1 Paddy Power), as he bids to repeat the feat of Scott and Day and become a major winner in his own right.

Should he triumph Leishman (50/1 in the outright market) will become the first Australian to hoist the Claret Jug since win since Greg Norman back in 1993.

Leishman, 34th in the world, has come agonisingly close to glory before with three top-5 finishes at The Open (x2) and The Masters. At The Open these have occurred in the last three years, as he carded T5 in 2014, then a runners-up spot the following year after losing in a four-hole play-off, with the latter a particularly hard pill to swallow.

Leishman is enjoying a decent run of form, as he heads to England on the back of a 5th place finish at the Quicken Loans National. Prior to this the 33-year-old recorded top-20 finishes at the Travelers Championship, The Memorial Tournament and the AT&T Byron Nelson, while back in March he tasted success at the Arnold Palmer Invitational.

Leishman, who handles the windy conditions well, will have learnt from his near misses and will be confident that he can handle the pressure situations well should he find himself in the upper echelons of the leaderboard later this week.
