After the excitement of the US Masters, the PGA Tour moves on to The Heritage in South Carolina this week. The Sea Pines Resort in on Hilton Head Island boasts one of the shortest courses on the tour and it all looks set for Luke Donald to impress when the tournament gets underway on Thursday, as he is 9/1 favourite in the odd with Paddy Power.
The course for The Heritage is less than 7000 yards and has some of the shortest greens on the PGA Tour, which suggests that Luke Donald could thrive this week. The course appears to be perfectly suited to his game and as the top ranked player in the field he could well take some beating. Donald is a man in form after finishing in the top ten in nine of his last ten events and he is now as high as number three in the world rankings. The Englishman also has prior Heritage form to call on as he was tied third last year and runner up in 2008, and at industry best priced odds of 9/1 he could be worth backing to finally secure the title.
Donald is unlikely to have things all his own way though as a strong field has gathered and defending champion Jim Furyk is unlikely to give up his title without a fight. Paddy Power price him at an industry best of 16/1 after he defeated Brian Davies in a thrilling play-off last year. Furyk has also been runner up twice here before and it would be no surprise to see him in the mix on a course he enjoys. He has improved after a poor start to 2011 and despite just two tops tens and two missed cuts this year, Furyk has finished in the top 25 in his last three events.
Also available at industry best priced odds of 16/1 is Matt Kuchar and the American has been a beacon of consistency this year. The world number ten finished fourteenth here last year and has a best finish of seventh in the tournament, and 2011 has seen him consistently in the mix. Six top tens in nine events provide a strong indicator of his ability, but he is still searching for a first tour win of the year and this week could be a chance to challenge Donald.
Elsewhere, PaddyPower.com offer Aaron Baddeley at industry best odds of 22/1 and the Australian has a fine record in The Heritage. The 2008 winner was also a runner up in 2006 and despite a 47th place finish in the Masters he could well enjoy a return to South Carolina.
Another former champion in the form of Brian Gay could provide value as he is available at odds of 25/1 to win outright or a tempting 6/1 to place. Gay was a sensational winner in 2009 as he stormed to an amazing 20 under par to win by ten shots and a consistent 2011 suggests a place may be well within his grasp this week.
From a British and Irish perspective, Graeme McDowell is priced 25/1 after a couple of disappointing efforts in South Carolina in the past and 33/1 punt Ian Poulter has been on the drift. Luke Donald looks the most likely to fly the flag at the head of the leaderboard and the odds suggest he is very much the man to beat.
