The final event of the PGA Tour fall series, the Children's Miracle Network Classic, boasts a fascinating side story at the top two players in the tour's money list battle it out for the top earner title. Luke Donald has slipped to second in the rankings but is 8/1 favourite to win at the Walt Disney Resort, while Webb Simpson is a touch further back at 10/1 in the betting with Boylesports.
Donald has led the money list for much of the season but was bypassed by Simpson last weekend as the Englishman opted to take the weekend off. Donald quickly added this week's event to his schedule and he needs to produce something special if he is to end the season as the top earner.
The Englishman is bidding to become the first player to top the money list of both the PGA Tour and the European Tour in the same season but he has to finish in the top two this week. It doesn't bode well that his last appearance on the Magnolia and Palm courses saw him miss the cut in 2003, although his worst finish in his last five events recently has been a tied eleventh at the Madrid Masters.
Simpson leads Donald by $363,029 after he finished runner-up at the McGladrey Classic last week. For Donald to take the title, he must finish no worse than a two-way tie for second and Simpson will have to finish 23rd or worse. If Donald finishes sole second then Simpson will need to finish in the top eight, although he could only finish tied 40th in this event last year.
We fancy Donald could well edge it after showing remarkable consistency this year and if he does manage to win the tournament, then the only way Simpson could edge him in the money list would be to finish sole second.
For a bit more value in the betting, it could be worth looking at Donald's fellow countryman Justin Rose at 14/1 with Boylesports.com. Rose has a fantastic record in this tournament having finished third once and fourth twice, while he also holds the course record on the Palm Course after firing a stunning 60 in 2006. He has ended the season in very fine form after winning the BMW Championship.
With the Donald v Simpson battle dominating headlines and the build-up to this event, it would be easy to forget about the rest of the field but there is some strong opposition this week.
Gary Woodland is available at 20/1 on his first appearance at Disney and he arrives on the back of five consecutive top 25 finishes, taking his tally to 14 top 25s in 24 appearances this year.
Charles Howell III (22/1) meanwhile has claimed seven top tens this year and has made the last nine cuts at the Network Classic.
Elsewhere, Trevor Immelman made the top ten in a tournament for the first time in three years at the McGladrey last week and is a 33/1 punt, while defending champion Robert Garrigus will look to reproduce his final round 64 from last year as he bids to retain his title, with Boyles pricing him 50/1.
