BMW PGA Championship Odds: Westwood Heads Top Quality Field at the new Wentworth

World number three Lee Westwood heads the betting market ahead of this week’s PGA Championship at Wentworth with best price odds of 12/1 offered by Ladbrokes.

Westwood will head a top class field all in pursuit of the Championship, regarded by most as the flagship event of the European Tour. They will however have to take on the comprehensively refurbished West Course, all knowing that the course will be played with a much higher degree of difficulty than it ever has before. Changes to the greens, the approaches and to the length should add hugely to the excitement of the event, which will no longer be the ‘jolly’ than it once was. Defending champion, Paul Casey won this event last year with a score of -17, but if he gets anywhere close to that this year then he will, in all likelihood, win again.

Westwood and Casey are just two of the top Europeans who will be at the Surrey course this week, confirming that the event is still regarded as highly prestigious. They will be joined by Ernie Els, a resident at Wentworth and who is, by and large, responsible for the many changes that have taken place. With such profound knowledge of the course therefore, Els would appear to be a reasonable bet to win, something that he has always failed to do, despite winning the old World Matchplay at the course several times. Els is third in the betting with odds of 14/1 also offered by Ladbrokes.

Also looking forward to a first PGA victory will be Ian Poulter, ranked 6th in the world, Rory McIlroy, ranked 9th, Martin Kaymer, 11th and three time Major winner, Padraig Harrington, currently ranked 12th; A line up which should produce the best golf seen so far in the 2010 ‘Race to Dubai.

All of these top players feature prominently in the betting and we think the winner will come from one of those mentioned. However there are one or two other form players, not so well known, who could produce the goods this week, including, South African, Charl Scwartzel , a two time winner already this season and apart from the Players Championship a couple of weeks ago, has been playing really well on the US Tour. He is now ranked at number 24 in the world and is a tasty 25/1 with Ladbrokes shot to win here. Odds which make him an excellent each way option.
