The first round of the Accenture World Matchplay in Arizona threw up plenty of shocks and suprises on what was a good day for the bookmakers. Top seed Steve Stricker was the biggest name to fall on day one as he lost out to Englishman Ross McGowan on the first extra hole of their match. McGowan was only in the tournament courtesy of Phil Mickelson's absense and was a 200/1 shot for the title before play started on Wednesday.
12/1 Favourite to win the tournament Stricker was in good company when it came to first round casualties, with three time major winner Padraig Harrington losing 3&1 to Jeev Milka Singh, Ross Fisher's 5&4 loss to Thongchai Jaidee and Anthony Kim's defeat to Matt Kuchar all pleasing the bookmakers.

It wasn't all bad news for punters though as many peoples favourite Geoff Ogilvy blew away Swede Alexander Noren 7&5 and both Rory McIlroy and Ian Poulter came from behind to score wins and make it through to the last thirty-two. Ogilvy is now as short as 8/1 to score back to back wins in this event with Paddy Power, whilst McIlroy and Poulter were clipped in to 10/1 and 14/1 respectively. Poulter plays Adam Scott in the second round and with the defeats to Harrington, Stricker and Fisher in the Bobby Jones quarter, the Englishman will be fancying himself to make the semi-finals and is worth an each-way bet for the title at 14/1.

The big market mover at the head of the betting was Paul Casey who cruised past Stephen Ames 5&4, setting up a second round match with Mike Weir, himself a massive 8&6 winner over Alvaro Quiros on Wednesday. Casey is now 10/1 second favourite with PaddyPower.
There are some tasty match-ups on Thursday as Lee Westwood takes on young American Nick Watney and favourite Geoff Ogilvy plays Columbian Camilo Villegas, himself an impressive first round winner over Dustin Johnson. The big match of the day however is the all South-African affair between Ernie Els and Retief Goosen. Els beat Ryan Moore 4&3 on Wednesday and goes into this match slight favourite at 4/5 with Paddy Power. Goosen's 3&2 win over Soren Hansen set up the match and he can be backed at 10/11.
