The unique Bob Hope Classic gets underway on Wednesday in La Quinta, California, and the betting looks to be wide open. The $5 million event takes in four different courses, involves 90 holes and includes a celebrity Pro-Am event. Matt Kuchar is favourite for the tournament at odds of 8/1 with William Hill bookmakers at the moment but there is a raft of potential winners throughout the field.
The third event of the PGA Tour takes place over five days and each player plays a round each day at one of four courses around La Quinta, California. Matt Kuchar is the stand out name in what is a weakened lineup this week, with the likes of Ernie and Els and Tiger Woods absent, and Phil Mickelson preferring to play the Abu Dhabi Championship. The celebrity part of the tournament is sure to bring in the crowds though and it promises to make for an exciting betting spectacle.
Kuchar catches the eye when looking at the odds and he will be looking to improve on his tied second position at last year's Bob Hope Classic. He has started the 2011 season in decent form with a sixth placed finish at the Hyundai Tournament of Champions and a fifth at the Sony Open in Hawaii. He faces stiff competition, not least from defending champion Bill Haas who will be keen to retain his title and can be backed at odds of 16/1 with Hills.
Haas hasn't impressed too much since then, but a man who has produced the goods is Tim Clark. He finished tied second with Kuchar and Bubba Watson last year, and was hugely impressive at the Sony Open last week. He finished tied second and will be looking to go one better, and looks good value at odds of 12/1 with WilliamHill.com. The only problem with Clark is there are concerns over his attendance this week due to him suffering from severe blistering so it is well worth checking that he is definitely playing before backing him.
Meanwhile, Steve Marino could be worth a look at odds of 33/1 with WilliamHill.com. Marino is often thought of as one of the best players not to have won a tour event but he has a decent record in the Bob Hope. He has made the cut in all three of his appearances and has started the 2011 season in decent form as he finished tied second in Hawaii last week. His lack of experience of winning a tournament may create doubts, and with that in mind he looks great value at industry best priced odds of 8/1 to at least place this week.
Finally, Chad Campbell is another to look out for as an outside bet in what is such an open field as he comes in at odds of 33/1 with William Hill. The 2006 champion may have missed the cut last year thanks to a third round 79, but he did follow that up with a 64 and a 69, and played well to finish tied 13th in Hawaii last week. He could be one of several dark horses to win this unique PGA Tour event.
