There is a stellar line-up for the Abu Dhabi Golf Championship which gets underway on Thursday as all four major winners from the 2010 season take to the Abu Dhabi course. The event marks the start of the 'Desert Swing' and with a prize purse of 2 million(Euros) at stake there are plenty of top names in the reckoning. Plenty of players have fine form and history at this event and it is reigning champion Martin Kaymer who heads the betting with Paddy Power bookmakers.
Race To Dubai winner Kaymer is an industry best priced bet of 8/1 to win and it will come as no surprise that he is favourite this week. The German won this tournament last year with a 21 under par total of 267 and it was his first tournament win of a stunning 2010. He went on to win three other tournaments, including the USPGA Championship, and he will be looking to get his 2011 season off to another flyer. He knows what the Abu Dhabi course has to offer and the course is a home away from home for him as his win in 2010 followed a win in the same event in 2008 and a tied second in 2009. The course traditionally suits big hitters and Kaymer could well lay down a marker for the rest of 2011.
Paul Casey also has a fine record at the Abu Dhabi Championship as he won in 2007 and 2009. The Englishman is currently 12/1 in the betting with PaddyPower.com and he ended the 2010 season in fine fettle with four top six finishes. This is his first event of 2011, but if he can shake off the early season rust he should be right in the mix.
Graeme McDowell is 14/1 in the betting and will have been boosted by the news that he is tied fourth with Phil Mickelson in the latest world rankings. He is in decent nick after a tied third place finish at the Hyundai Tournament of Champions and should go in with plenty of confidence. He looks good as a 15/2 bet to be top Great Britain and Ireland player this week with Paddy Power. Mickelson is making a surprise appearance at Abu Dhabi as he normally starts his season in the United States and he is an outside bet at 22/1.
Meanwhile, world number one Lee Westwood is an industry best price of 9/1, but other than a tied second in 2008 here he has not had the best of recent history on the course and may be better left alone.
A tempting outside bet could be the Open Champion Louis Oosthuizen who after winning the Open endured a difficult 2010. He can be backed at 13/8 to be top South African this week and that could be worth a look. The South African appears to have picked up of late and has shortened to 18/1 with Paddy Power to actually win the tournament as he looks to follow up his win at the recent Africa Open with another win. He looks to be in good nick and has plenty of practise under his belt with the Sunshine Tour underway, and add that to his fifth place here in 2010 and tied second in 2009 he could be a dangerous proposition to the crown of favourite Martin Kaymer.
