The Dunlop Phoenix tournament in Japan has been dominated, since its inception in 1973, by overseas players and there remains a strong overseas feel to the betting this time around, although a Japanese superstar will hope end the foreign monopoly. Ryo Ishikawa is the Japanese player amongst a sea of Europeans and Australians at the top of the betting, and he has been made joint favourite with Robert Karlsson to win the tournament with Boylesports bookmakers at odds of 9/1.
A Japanese player hasn't won the tournament, held at the Phoenix Country Club in Miyazaki, since 2002 and Ishikawa will hope to break that sequence of results. It is a tournament that always attracts plenty of players from abroad and many great names have won the tournament in the past, including Tiger Woods, Padraig Harrington and Ernie Els, although the field in 2010 doesn't quite match the quality of those players there are still plenty of good European and Australian players competing.
Swede Robert Karlsson's odds of winning have shortened with boylesports.com, and he will be hoping to go one better than in 2009. He lost out to the Italian Edoardo Molinari in 2009, and Karlsson has had a decent 2010 - winning the Qatar Open and finishing second in the Portugal Masters. He looks a great bet at 9/1 and should be all the stronger for his experience of losing at the same course to Molinari in a play-off last year.
Japan's Ishikawa is just 19 years of age and has plenty of tournament wins left in him and you wouldn't back against him putting on a good show in front of his home crowd at the Dunlop Phoenix. His odds have drifted to 9/1 to win the tournament, but he remains a decent bet with Boylesports to place at odds of 8/5. Ishikawa was the runner-up at this tournament in 2008 so it is a course he knows well, while this year he won the Visa Taiteiyo event by beating the Australian Brendan Jones by 2 strokes, but lost out in the Mynavi ABC Championship.
It was South Korea's Kim Kyung-tae who was victorious by one stroke against Ishikawa in the Mynavi, and he is a 12/1 shot to win the Dunlop Phoenix tournament, or alternatively he could be worth a look to place at odds of 12/5 with Boylesports.
Last year's winner Edoardo Molinari is also in the mix after an excellent couple of years in golf, he followed up a brilliant 2009 by winning the 2010 Scottish Open by two strokes from Darren Clarke and the 2010 Johnnie Walker Championship as he defeated Australian Brett Rumford by one stroke. He was also part of the victorious European Ryder Cup team and he is an industry best price odds of 12/1 with Boylesports bookmakers to successfully defend his crown. Australian Robert Allenby is also right in the mix with odds of 10/1. It is sure to be an interesting few days in Japan and it will make for compelling viewing as Ishikawa attempts to end the foreign dominance of this Japanese tournament.
