After the drama of last week's TPC at Sawgrass, the PGA Tour moves on to Texas for the Crowne Plaza Invitational at the Colonial Country Club beginning on Thursday. A strong field has assembled, with Hunter Mahan heading the betting with Ladbrokes at 16/1. The American winner of last season's Bridgestone, finished tied for sixth last week in Florida but will have to shake off a rather sorry run of form at Colonial if he wants to feature at the sharp end this week. Last week's finish was his sixth top ten of the season, but mahan has never finished in the top 25 in this event in seven attempts.
Last year's winner of this event Zach Johnson is one of a trio of players on 20/1 for the 2011 renewal. Johnson tied for 12th last week and obviously enjoys playing at Colonial. Jason Day enjoys it that much that he is a memeber of the Colonial Country Club and the young Aussie will be hoping that a bit of local knowledge will help him improve on his sixth place finish last week in the TPC. Matt Kuchar joins Johnson and Day at 20/1 coming off the back of his worst finish for twelve months last week.
Further down the betting, Steve Marino is an interesting competitior. The American is still in search of his first win on the PGA Tour but has hit the post twice this season finishing second in the Sony Open and the Arnold Palmer Invitational. He carded a top twenty at Sawgrass last week and has finished second here at Colonial twice before. At odds of 40/1 with Ladbrokes Marino looks a decent each-way bet.
Other players with course form at bigger prices include former winners Rory Sabbatini and Sergio Garcia. South African Sabbatini is a player in form having won the Honda Classic earlier this year as well as two other top ten finishes. Garcia on the other hand is still on the comeback trail following some time off at the end of last season. The Spaniard has shown glimpses of form including a final round of 65 last Sunday to give him a tied for twelfth finish at Sawgrass. The 2001 winner of this event is 33/1 to get his second win at Colonial, the same price as Sabbatini who won here more recently in 2007.
Another former winner is the veteran Kenny Perry who took first prize at Colonial in 2003 and 2005. Perry has been struggling with his form over the last couple of years but he showed signs of returning finishing tied for 33rd at the TPC and at odds of 100/1, he could be worth a small each-way bet to wrack up a hat-trick of wins at the Texas track.
