The Volvo Golf Champions may have moved venues but the players will remain in South Africa for the €2m event this week. The tournament was held in Bahrain last year but will be held at the Links course at Fancourt in South Africa this year, with Louis Oosthuizen 5/1 favourite with Boylesports to win on home soil for the second time this season.
The event features a strong field as only winners from last season's European Tour and players with ten or more European Tour wins under their belt are in attendance. Last year's Golf Champions winner Paul Casey won't defend the crown he won in the UAE though as he has dislocated his shoulder.
That leaves Oosthuizen as the firm favourite and there is very little counting against him this week. Oosthuizen enjoys links courses and he arrives in fine form after notching six top tens from his last six starts on the European Tour. The South African opened his 2012 campaign with a stunning victory in the Africa Open, where he finished 27 under par, and he averages 67.67 from his last eighteen rounds of golf.
Fellow South African, Charl Schwartzel, had a slightly more inauspicious start to 2012 as he missed the cut when bidding for a hat trick in the Joburg Open last week. The US Masters winner is the highest ranked player in the field this week and will be keen to kick start his season, with Boyles pricing him 13/2.
It is another South African who is well fancied in the odds as Retief Goosen is next best at 13/1. Goosen may not be the winning force he once was but he has started the season well with a third at the African Open and a 16th at Joburg, while he is well acquainted with this course after winning the South African Open at Fancourt in December 2005.
Goosen beat Els (18/1) here six years ago and Els is set to make his first start of the season this week. Els tied the Presidents Cup for the International team against USA here in 2003 and his course knowledge could count for a great deal, although, like Goosen, he hasn't tasted a great deal of success of late.
Meanwhile, Robert Karlsson is available at 13/1 on his first outing of the season and the Swede tends to be a fast starter as he notched four consecutive top sixes at the back end of 2010 and the start of 2011. He was eleventh at the Dubai World Championship last month and cannot be discounted.
Elsewhere, Branden Grace (25/1) arrives on the back of his first European Tour win at the Joburg Open last week, while Robert Rock could be worth an each-way look from odds of 28/1 with Boylesports.com. The Englishman was ninth at the Joburg Open despite leading after 36 holes and we fancy he could be ready to step his consistent finishes up a notch, particularly as he loves playing in South Africa.
