Following the excitement of the USPGA Championship, the PGA Tour moves on to North Carolina for the Wyndham Championship this week. The Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro is renowned for being a low scoring course that suits the better putters on the tour and it is no surprise that David Toms heads the betting at an industry best price of 12/1 with Stan James.
Toms was runner-up in the event last year and he arrives in fine form this time around, with many believing that he is the man to beat. In 2010, Toms lost out to surprise winner Arjun Atwal, who claimed his first career title thanks in main to an opening round 61 and Atwal is a 150/1 punt this time.
Toms looks the more likely winner this year after he picked up top ten finishes in his last two outings, including a tied fourth at the USPGA Championship. This year's Crowne Plaza Invitational winner is one of the best putters in the field and this course looks ideally suited to the American.
Meanwhile, USPGA runner-up Jason Dufner is in the field this week and he is a 40/1 chance for his first career title. He is very much an 'all or nothing' type of player as his last nine events have yielded four top eight finishes and five missed cuts.
A better chance looks to be 18/1 shot Bill Haas, who finished tied twelfth at last week's final major of the season. Haas looks to be moving back into form after he started the year on fire but struggled mid-season, and it is well worth remembering that he was tied tenth here in 2009 after opening with an eight under par 62.
Webb Simpson is a player who is bang in form despite missing the cut in Atlanta this week and he is our pick for the title at 20/1 in the betting with StanJames.com. Simpson had six consecutive top 16 finishes to his name before the USPGA and he has six top ten finishes in seventeen outings this year, a huge improvement on his two top tens of last season. Simpson was tied eighth here last year after he hit rounds of 63, 64 and 66.
Charles Howell III is available at 22/1 after he finished tied 13th in his only appearance in the Wyndham in 2009. He also had three consecutive top five finishes to his name before the British Open.
Some each-way value could come in the form of Brandt Snedeker as he won the tournament in 2007 at Forest Oaks. The move to the Sedgefield Country Club hasn't proven to be a problem for Snedeker since though as he finished tied fifth in 2009 and tied eighth last year, and as an excellent putter he looks good value at 25/1 in the betting.
Elsewhere, Jim Furyk is a 33/1 chance, although he hasn't finished in the top 20 in his last thirteen outings, while Retief Goosen (50/1) and Ernie Els (66/1) will attempt to rediscover some form after disrupted seasons so far. Goosen looks the better bet if he is over his injury problems as in his last ten appearances he has withdrawn with injury twice, missed the cut just once and finished in the top 25 on seven occasions.
