Darren Clarke has given himself a great chance of picking up a first ever major title as he is the outright clubhouse leader heading into the final day of the Open Championship. The Northern Irishman is now five under par at Royal St George's and his odds of winning the tournament have been clipped right in to an industry best of 3/1 with Paddy Power.
Clarke takes a one shot lead into the final day and he showed no signs of nerves after taking the lead on Friday. The experienced Northern Irishman was runner up at Royal Troon in 1997 and third at Royal Lytham in 2000, and those experiences should stand him in great stead ahead of a final tilt on Sunday.
It is Dustin Johnson who is the bookies' favourite to win the Open though as the big hitting American fired a joint best third round score of 68. It was a great effort as the players had to contend with difficult conditions throughout the day and Johnson was only one of three players to go round under par. There are in fact only six players under par for the tournament and Johnson is just one shot behind Clarke, with Paddy Power pricing him the 9/4 favourite.
Johnson's fellow American, Rickie Fowler, also went round in 68 as the 22-year-old showed a great appetite for the challenge. Fowler had to endure some of the worst of the weather conditions, including 35mph winds, as he picked up three shots on the last six holes. He can be backed at industry best priced odds of 15/2 with PaddyPower.com at this stage as he is two under par and bidding to become the youngest British Open champion since Seve Ballesteros in 1979.
The next best in the odds is Thomas Bjorn, as the Dane has kept himself in the mix after sharing the lead at the end of the first day. He is now available at 12/1 and he is just three shots back from Clarke.
USPGA champion Martin Kaymer also remains well fancied, even though he is level par for the tournament, with Paddy Power going 18/1 on his chances. And punters could be tempted to look even further afield if they fancy a Jean Van de Velde-esque final day meltdown, as happened in 1999 when Paul Lawrie overturned ten shots on Van De Velde on the final day to win the British Open at Carnoustie.
Fans' favourite Miguel Angel Jimenez is two over after shooting 72 on Saturday and he is available at 18/1, while US Open champion Rory McIlroy is a huge 80/1 punt at four over, following a third round 74 that included a double bogey seven on the fourteenth.
It all looks set to be an absorbing final day at Royal St George's and you can keep up to date with all the latest odds, betting news and leaderboard at our dedicated Open Championship mini-site.
