It's a bumper week of golf ahead with the Dunlop Phoenix taking place in Japan beginning on Thursday. With two European Tour events this week in Malaysia in the Johor Open and the Alfred Dunhill Championship from South Africa, there are a few PGA and European tour players lining up in this Japan Tour event. The Tom Watson designed Phoenix Country Club hosts this week's tournament, which has a very open betting field to it.
Both Ryo Ishikawa and Kyung tae Kim, two monsters of the Japan Tour are missing this week as they line up for the International Team down under in the President's Cup. With 200 million Yen up for grabs, the likes of Graeme McDowell and Gary Woodland make the trip[ out to Japan and it's no surprise that they're amongst the favourites in the betting.
McDowell has been in decent form of late, finishing third in the WGC-HSBC Champions in China a fortnight ago before another good display last week in Singapore where he finished tied for thirteenth. The 2010 US Open winner is 9/1 joint favourite this year with bookmaker Bet365 where the Europeans dominate the betting.
The other favourite at 9/1 is last week's Singapore Open winner Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano, the Spaniard winning on the second hole of a play-off with Juvic Pagunsan in a rain affected tournament reduced to 54 holes. Gonzo as he is known has struggled with injury in 2011 but this was a welcome return to form and he could go well again this week.
Edoardo Molinari has made the short trip from Singapore where he gave a good showing in the Singapore Open last week finishing tied for fifth. The Italian played in this tournament last season where he finished tied for fourth and he was the winner in 2009. He can be backed this week at odds of 10/1 with Bet365 and looks to have a big chance.
There's a useful list of past winners for this event, with Tiger Woods a dual winner and the likes of Thomas Bjorn, Lee Westwood, Padraig Harrinton and Ian Polter all former winners here. A couple of Americans make the trip out East, with Gary Woodland the best fancied at 12/1 whilst Ricky Barnes is a 33/1 chance.
Sang-Moon Bae is the highest ranked player on the Japan Tour and he can be backed at odds of 14/1 with Bet 365. He's comfortably leading the order of merit and looks to be the one to beat from the local tour entrants. Toru Taniguchi is third on the Japan Tour rankings and is 14/1 to win this week, with Hiroyuki Fujita 22/1. Fujita is down in twelfth in the rankings but has plenty of experience, as does best price 25/1 chance Yuta Ikeda who is seventh in the order of merit and winner here twelve months ago.
