Pablo Martin will attempt to become part of history this week by winning the Alfred Dunhill Championship in South Africa for a third successive year. The Spaniard faces a tough task at the Leopard Creek Country Club as a strong home contingent head the odds with Stan James for this European Tour and South African Sunshine Tour co-sanctioned event.
Martin has won the last two tournaments and is a hugely tempting 33/1 shot to make it a hat trick with Stan James bookmakers. Martin won by two shots last year after he birdied the final hole and if he manages to win this year's event he will join Ian Woosnam, Nick Faldo, Tiger Woods and Ernie Els as the only men to win a European Tour event three times in succession.
However, the reason for his long odds is his current form - four missed cuts, two withdrawals and a 75th place finish in his last seven events. He did tie for fourth at the Scandinavian Masters which offers some hope and he looks decent each-way value on a course that seems to bring out the best in him.
It is South African George Coetzee who starts favourite at odds of 13/1 with Stan James though. Coetzee has recovered well from a tough middle part to his season and he has now picked up seven top five finishes for the year, including victory in the Telkom PGA Championship.
Coetzee's compatriot Thomas Aiken looks a tempting punt as he boasts excellent course form. Aiken was fifth here last year and fourth in 2009 and he is a player that often thrives on home soil. He can be backed at odds of 14/1 and that looks decent value for the Open de Espana winner, with a 19th place in the Race To Dubai standings testament to his excellent season.
Other South Africans well fancied this week include Jaco Van Zyl, who can be backed at 22/1 after picking up four top tens this year. His form on the Sunshine Tour should stand him in good stead and his fine driving style should suit the course, with six top 20 finishes in his last eight outings a sign of his consistency.
Jbe Kruger is priced 28/1 after performing well in Asia, although he has struggled for form elsewhere. Meanwhile, fellow 28/1 shot Hennie Otto enjoys the course and has a tied ninth finish from 2008, a tied 29th in 2009 and tied 15th last year to show for his last three appearances.
Finally, Englishman Robert Rock is well fancied at odds of 16/1 with StanJames.com and he is another for whom course form counts for a lot. He was tied 14th in 2008, runner up in 2009 and tied sixth last year, although he has struggled since winning his first European Tour title at the BMW Italian Open in May.
