USPGA champion Martin Kaymer heads the betting going into day three of the 2011 Open Championship as he remained in contention at the top of the leaderboard. The German carded a 69 to end the second day just one shot behind the leaders and he has been clipped into 6/1 with Bet 365 bookmakers, with Rory McIlroy not far behind.
Kaymer has been steady rather than spectacular so far as he finally found the form that saw him win the Race To Dubai and USPGA Championship last year. He had tinkered with his swing earlier this season in a desperate attempt to improve his woeful US Masters record, and only now is he reaping the rewards. Rounds of 68 and 69 left him three under par at the halfway stage and dangerously poised for a tilt at the title.
Ante-post favourite Rory McIlroy also remains in contention after he followed up his opening day 71 with a very fine 69. McIlroy is currently priced 8/1 by B365 as the US Open champion attempts to win back-to-back majors and live up to the hype that has been piled onto his shoulders since his amazing win at Congressional.
After a day of light winds and sunshine on Friday, Saturday is set to see more inclement weather and it could once again have a part to play at these Open Championships. Rain and wind is expected on Saturday afternoon and the tee of times could be crucial in determining who has the best of the conditions.
McIlroy's fellow Northern Irishman, Darren Clarke, certainly made the most of decent conditions on Friday as he ended the day as the joint clubhouse leader at four under par. Clark rolled back the years as the 42-year-old enjoyed an up-and-down second round, during which he hit an eagle, five birdies, three bogeys and a double bogey. Clarke has been clipped right in to 14/1 in the betting with Bet365.com as he bids to win the tournament he has finished second (1997) and third (2001) in the past.
Fellow clubhouse leader is 2009 US Open champion Lucas Glover and he too is priced 14/1 by Bet 365, while US Masters champion Charl Schwartzel remains dangerously poised at two under. Schwartzel carded a quite brilliant 67 on day two and is a tempting 12/1 in the betting.
Elsewhere, the ever popular Sergio Garcia remains in the mix at par after his opening rounds of 70 and 66. He can be backed at 22/1 to win his first ever major title, while his fellow countryman, Miguel Angel Jimenez, also looks good value at 25/1.
There was plenty of European disappointment though as the likes of Graeme McDowell, Luke Donald and Lee Westwood missed the cut. There was some British joy as amateur and day one clubhouse leader Tom Lewis remains in the mix at one under par, and he has now drifted out to 80/1.
