The PGA Tour events continue to come thick and fast with this week's Northern Trust Open boasting a strong field at the Riviera Golf Club in California. Paddy Power bookmakers price world number four Phil Mickelson as 15/2 favourite in the odds but there is plenty of competition from the likes of Steve Stricker, Luke Donald and Dustin Johnson.
Mickelson has been favourite for several events this season but continues to flatter to deceive as a barren run of no tournament wins since last year's US Masters at Augusta continues. He did manage a to achieve a top ten finish at last week's Pebble Beach Pro-Am and he will no doubt welcome a visit to the Riviera Club as he is a two time winner of the Northern Trust Open, but we think there is better value to be had elsewhere.
Reigning champion Steve Stricker is back for a crack at defending the title he won during a solid 2010 for a man who has a fine record at the Riviera. Stricker had finished 11th and runner up prior to winning the tournament and is available at odds of 12/1 with PaddyPower to secure a win this week. He is likely to be right in the mixer this week and we fancy he could produce the goods again as he has continued to impress in 2011 with a tied 4th at the Hyundai Tournament of Champions and tied 9th at the Sony Open.
It is last year's runner up who catches our eye this week for a place finish at least as Luke Donald boats an impressive record in the Northern Trust Open. He has five top 15 finishes in six visits and in the last three he has never finished outside of the top six. He finished 2010 in similarly impressive form with top ten finishes in seven of his last eight appearances but there is a concern attached to his name as this will be his first appearance of 2011. He can be backed to win the tournament outright at odds of 20/1 with PaddyPower.com, but with his lack of match practise he might be a better look to place at tempting odds of 4/1.
Elsewhere, Dustin Johnson has disappointed for much of the 2011 PGA Tour season but he is another who enjoys the Riviera Club with a 3rd place in 2009 and a 10th in 2010, and he is priced at odds of 18/1 this week.
There is a clutch of players available at 22/1 with Paddy Power with 2011 form having a key influence on the odds. Hunter Mahan added a runner up spot at Pebble Beach to a 6th in the Farmers Insurance Open, while Matt Kuchar has three top tens to his name this year, and Paul Casey has won the Volvo Golf Champions but followed that up by missing the cut at the Qatar Masters. It is clearly a strong field that Stricker will have to overcome if he is to retain his title and we fancy he might just have the game to do it.
