The British Open Championship gets underway this Thursday at St Andrews, 150 years after the first ever ‘Open’ was played, although officially it is the 139th Open. We have put together a number of Open Championship tips for consideration, for which we have attempted to seek value on several plausible options. The tips come from the following betting markets:

This year there will be several former champions in the field, who between them have won the tournament 26 times. Tiger Woods of course is the favourite to win the tournament and to equal the five held by Tom Watson but others who are popular in the outright win market are Ernie Els, Padraig Harrington and defending champion, Stewart Cink. They should all be looked as possible candidates to back in the outright win market, but the remainder, been grouped together by the Bookmakers who are offering odds on which one will finish the highest by the end of the tournament.
2003 winner, Ben Curtis is the favourite with odds of 7/2, next best is John Daly, a former St Andrews winner at 4/1, with last year’s sensational runner up, Tom Watson at 7/1. Our tip to win this market however is Justin Leonard at 5/1 with Bet365. Leonard is a solid player in the wind and knows St Andrews well and who finished 8th at Turnberry last year and 16th at Royal Birkdale the year before.
Tip for Top Former Winner – Justin Leonard at 5/1
Sadly the country that the world owes the game of golf to the most, Scotland, will have very few representatives in the field this year. They include former champion, Paul Lawrie and Ryder Cup captain, Colin Montgomerie, who was second in the ‘Open’ behind Tiger Woods at St Andrews in 2005. Both have chances to finish as the top Scot this week, but we are tipping up rising star Steven Gallagher, who is currently lying 16th in the ‘Race to Dubai’ . He has had a spate of top ten finishes lately and comes to St Andrews in great form as his top ten performance in the Scottish Open showed last week. He can be backed currently at 9/5 with bet365
Tip for Top Scot – Steven Gallager at 9/5

most plaudits and several leading players have suggested this year that there any number of players in with a chance of glory on the ‘Old Course’ which may well be true. The ‘Open’ has thrown up several surprise winners particularly over the last few years. Todd Hamilton for instance in 2004, Ben Curtis in 2003 and Paul Lawrie in 1999 are just three, who have held the Claret Jug aloft.
However, this is St Andrews and those who usually win here are rarely surprises. Tiger Woods has won here for the last two times, before him in 1995 it was John Daly, at the time one of the top three players in the world. Six time major winner, Sir Nick Faldo won in 1990, while the magnificent Seve Ballesteros took the honours in 1984. Before Seve it was the legendary Jack Nicklaus who won in both 1978 and 1970. The point being is that only the very best wins at this course, which is why our tip to win will be Irishman, Padraig Harrington, already a dual Open Champion and a three time ‘Major’ winner. The course and the expected conditions will suit his game; he is in great form with several top ten finishes lately and with odds of 22/1 with Bet365.com he offers great value.
