Davis Love Adds Even More Experience To Strong Looking USA Ryder Cup Team
The USA have been simply woeful over the past 15 years or so when it comes to the Ryder Cup but there is a real positive feeling when it comes to their chances later this month. The US team have won the Ryder Cup just once in their last seven attempts and with that in mind, Captain Davis Love III has decided to add even more experience to his team this week.
Love was the man in charge the last time the USA won back in 2008 and he got the chance to make three of his four picks on Monday afternoon and there is no doubting what he was trying to do. A 'Ryder Cup task force' was set up after their dismal showing in Gleneagles and the brains trust have put their heads together to come up with a team that has just one rookie so far.
Fowler, Holmes and Kuchar Selected
Love still has the luxury of waiting until the end of the Fedex Play-Offs to make his final selection but for now there were few surprises on Monday as he added Rickie Fowler, Matt Kuchar and JB Holmes to his team with all three having Ryder Cup experience on their CV.
The ultra consistent Matt Kuchar was probably the easiest pick with his recent form as solid as ever, whilst his bronze medal and decent Ryder Cup record make him an obvious pick although it should be noted, he is yet to taste victory in the Ryder Cup.
JB Holmes was part of that American winning team of 2008 which will help him here and his recent form has also been good in recent weeks which was enough to get him on the squad. Holmes remains in Fedex Cup contention and will be hoping to play himself into even better form ahead of Hazeltine but there is no doubt he will be delighted to get back on the team.
Rickie Fowler was perhaps the biggest name not to make the team automatically after an erratic season which has seen him slip down the rankings. Fowler was on losing teams in 2010 and 2014 so will be desperate to claim his first Ryder Cup team but he will have no competitive golf between now and Hazeltine having been knocked out of the Fedex Play-Offs at the weekend which has to be a worry for Love.
Love will now wait to make his 4th and final pick with two times Masters Champion Bubba Watson the favourite to get that selection although his form has also been poor of late, whilst the rumour that he is far from an ideal team mate could also harm his chances. Other contenders include Justin Thomas, Ryan Moore and Kevin Kisner who all have the opportunity to play their way on to the team in the next few weeks and there is no doubt that Love does have room for another rookie.
USA Remain The Clear Favourites For The Win
Anything other than a win is simply unthinkable for the USA this time and in truth, if they can't win this time you have to question when they ever will again. Davis Love has the luxury of home advantage and experience to go to war with up against a European team who are packed with rookies and who are going through something of a transitional phase after years of glory.
Dustin Johnson, Jordan Spieth, Phil Mickelson, Patrick Reed and Zach Johnson are all Major winners whilst as it stands only Brooks Koepka will be going to his first Ryder Cup on the American team which surely has to put them in pole position. The betting certainly remains in favour of an American win with 8/13 the best price in the village with Bet Victor about a home win at this stage, whilst a European success is available at 15/8 with Paddy Power.
