Players from the European Tour exchange the Race To Dubai for a Ryder Cup-style event this week as the Vivendi Seve Trophy gets underway on Thursday. The two teams involved are a Continental Europe side against a GB & Ireland side and it is the Europeans who start as the most marginal of favourites at 4/5 with Boylesports bookmakers. GB & Ireland are just a touch further back at evens as the players take to the Golf de Saint-Nom-la-Bretcche in Paris.
Frenchman Jean van de Velde will captain the European side for the first time and he will be hoping his knowledge of home conditions can pay dividends, particularly as GB & Ireland have won the last five renewals of this biennial event. The Europeans last won the Seve Trophy back in its inaugural year in 2000 but their young side is well fancied to break that duck.
They can boast some up and coming stars in the likes of Matteo Manassero and Pablo Larrazabal, mixed with the experience of Thomas Bjorn and Miguel Angel Jimenez. The Spaniard in particular will be keen to perform well as the trophy is named after his friend and countryman Seve Ballesteros, who was a huge fan of the tournament.
Jimenez has played every Seve Trophy event and he looks tempting value at 16/1 in the odds to be top combined points scorer in the event with Boylesports.com.
It is a trio of GB & Ireland players that head that particular market though and Lee Westwood is well fancied at 7/1 to be top point scorer. Westwood often thrives in these type of events and how often has he led from the front for the Ryder Cup team? This might not have the same lustre as the Ryder Cup but Westwood still looks a safe bet to produce the goods here and he is 7/2 to be top GB & Ireland player.
Teammate Ian Poulter has endured a tough year but he is another that thrives in these team-based events and he is 9/1 to be top point scorer this week.
Of more interest could be the in form Simon Dyson, who can be backed at odds of 10/1 to be top point scorer with Boyles. Dyson won the KLM Open for a third time at the weekend and he has been in electric form of late, winning two of his last six tournaments. Dyson was part of the 2007 GB & Ireland team and he is 11/2 to be his team's top player.
The problem for the GB & Ireland team is the fact their weaker players don't seem to have quite the same quality as the European side and Westwood and co will have their work cut out to carry those players to a sixth successive Seve Trophy victory.
