American Steve Stricker heads the betting going into Saturday's third day's play of the 2011 PGA Championship at the Atlanta Athletic Club. Stricker let slip a two shot lead after day one by carding a four over par 74 on Friday, but still heads the betting with youngsters Keegan Bradley and Jason Dufner leading the tournament on five under par. Stricker started the day on seven under par following a 63 shot on Thursday, but his second round included six bogeys and two birdies, seeing the world number four slip down to three under. Bookmaker Bet365 are going best price 15/2 for Stricker to bounce back at the weekend and win his first major tournament.
Another player in search of his first major is world number two Lee Westwood, who is second favourite at odds of 17/2 to do so with Bet 365. Westwood followed up a first round 71 with a two under round of 68 on Friday to leave the Englishman on -1, just four shots off the lead.
Last week's WGC Bridgestone Invitational winner Adam Scott is one shot better off on two under par and touched favourtism in-running on Friday as he teed off on 18 just one shot off the lead on four under par. A double bogey at the last cost Scott two shots and favourtism with Bet365 making the Australian their 9/1 joint third favourite to win his first major.
Also on 9/1 is American Jim Furyk. The American has been having a quiet year by his high standards but played his way into contention on Friday with a second round total of 65. That wasn't the best round of the day however, with Jason Dufner also shooting a 65 to leave him on five under par leading the field and available to back at odds of 16/1. He shares the lead with another young American, Keegan Bradley who shot the best round of the day, a 64 leaving him best price 14/1 to follow up a good week in the Bridgestone with a win here at 14/1 with Bet365.
Further down the betting is Aussie John Senden at 16/1, who has shot two rounds of 68 to be just one shot off the pace. Anders Hansen is the top European on three under par and can be backed at odds of 28/1, with Bet365 clearly expecting the Dane to blow up at some point over the weekend.
With so many of the leaderboard lacking experience in the major tournaments, it's no real surprise that Stricker, Westwood and Scott head the betting, but the likes of Luke Donald and Phil Mickelson have six shots to make up on the leader and if Rory McIlroy wants to make a move he knows that he's going to have to shoot low on Saturday to stand any chance.
