The British Open and bad weather often go hand in hand and so often it can play a crucial part in the outcome of an Open Championship. With an unpredictable forecast for the four days at Royal St George's this week, Sky Bet are offering a market on how much of an effect the British weather will have as part of a variety of betting specials on offer from the bookmaker.
Rain, sun and wind are all forecast to have a part to play at Sandwich in Kent this week, although Sky Bet go 2/9 on that play is not suspended during the four days. Last week's Scottish Open fell prey to conditions as it was reduced to 54 holes and at last year's British Open the wind played havoc.
Rory McIlroy shot an excellent opening round in 2010 before the wind, which was whipping balls around the greens, caused him to shoot a second round 80 that effectively put paid to his Open chances. With that in mind, it is well worth looking at the forecast and the player groupings this week as a player who has to face the worst of the conditions could sees his chances disintegrate.
Colin Montgomerie found that to his cost in 2002 when he shot a 64 and followed that up with an 84, although most fans will be hoping that it is another warm weather week at Sandwich, as it was in 2003 when Ben Curtis took the title.
Royal St George's isn't adverse to being affected by the weather though as play was suspended in 1938 as wind caused chaos and Sky Bet offer 3/1 that play is suspended this week.
Lee Westwood has said he is hoping for a little bit of wind as it is an important part of links golf and the world number two is one of the leading fancies for this year's tournament. Westwood is managed by Chubby Chandler's International Sports Management (ISM) company, as are tournament favourite and US Open champion Rory McIlroy, defending champion Louis Oosthuizen, US Masters winner Charl Schwartzel and former Open champion Ernie Els.
SkyBet.com offer a betting market for any ISM player to win the Open Championship and that can be backed at 9/4.
Furthermore, there is a specials market on offer for a player with 'Mc' in their surname to take the Claret Jug, with SkyBet offering 11/2 that a 'Mc' wins. Rory McIlroy is of course 8/1 favourite to win the event, while Graeme McDowell is a former US Open champion himself and has every chance. While an outside 'Mc punt' could come from 1000/1 shot Francis McGuirk.
Finally, another Open Championship special that could provide some interest is the 16/1 on offer for any player to shoot 18 straight pars in a round, as Nick Faldo did on his way to winning the British Open at Muirfield in 1987.
