American golf is currently in one of its worst states for many years. For the first time in 17 years, all the major trophies are held by players from outside of the United States.
We now reach the third major of 2011 – the Open Championship at Royal St. George’s – and it looks as if the non-American dominance is set to continue. The top-6 golfers in the betting market are all Europeans and this seems to be where all the money is going this week. Punters can’t be blamed either because it is hard to have confidence in backing the American contingent when they haven’t performed at the majors over the last year and look set to struggle on the windswept links of Sandwich this week.
However, while they might not win this week, Americans do have a tremendous record at British Opens and many of those who have crossed the Atlantic over the last week will put in quality performances at Royal St. George’s. So while the top Europeans will most likely battle it out for the Claret Jug, there can still be value in choosing who you believe will be the top American golfer at the Open Championship.
Unibet place Nick Watney as the joint-favourite in their top American betting market at 8/1 alongside Steve Stricker. One of the most in-form players on the PGA Tour this year, Watney is coming off the back a victory at the AT & T National a couple a weeks ago. He also performed well at St. Andrews last year at the Open when he tied-seventh so he shouldn’t be phased by the unique conditions at Sandwich. Stricker, meanwhile, is also in red-hot form after his victory at the John Deere Classic last week and with his scrambling and putting abilities, he has a great chance of contending here this week.
Matt Kuchar (10/1) has been one of the most consistent players on the PGA Tour this year – making the cut in every single tournament he has played and also notching up eight top-10 finishes. Even when he crossed the pond last week to take part in the Scottish Open he kept up his high performance level and finished a very respectable tied-tenth.
Further down the top American betting market, Jeff Overton stands out at 24/1 with Unibet. He is a big hitter and should have no trouble in getting around Royal St. Georges this week. He put in one of the best performances on the American Ryder Cup team when he came over last year and also has two top-15 finishes in his last two Open Championship appearances. Rickie Fowler is another big hitter offered at 24/1 who finished just ahead of Overton last year at St. Andrews when he finished in 14th place.
Stewart Cink (29/1) and Ben Curtis (49/1) are both Americans who had Open success in the past. Cink won two years ago at Turnberry while Curtis was victorious the last time the Open was held at Royal St .George’s in 2003.
Of the players towards the end of the market, Kevin Na might be worth a look at 99/1. He has a great low-flight ball strike that will be good for penetrating the wind gushing around Sandwich and in his first Open Championship last year he finished inside the top-30. He has improved a lot this season and could be much higher up the leaderboard this year.
