The Open Championship gets underway at Royal St George's on Thursday and there will no doubt be plenty of interest in the three ball betting following the announcement of the Groupings for the Opening two days. We've previewed the best of the opening day match ups.....
8.31am Watney/Manassero/Cabrera
Nick Watney could well be representative of US chances at the British Open – a quality golfer on the PGA tour who will struggle with links golf and the expected windy conditions.
Manassero is one of the most exciting talents in the field this week. At only just 18 he already won two European Tour titles and will probably win a Claret Jug before long.
Cabrera produced a strong performance last week at the Scottish Open to finish in the top ten and suggests the big man is ready to compete at Royal St George’s.
Tip: Manassero @ 18/10 with Unibet.com
9.20am Donald/Ishikawa/Garcia
Luke Donald is the world No.1 and following his win last week at the Scottish Open will be confident of getting his Open challenge off to the fastest possible start. He has the short-game that suits links golf and his two best Open finishes have come in the last two years.
Much has been made of Sergio Garcia’s golf troubles in recent years. However, the Spaniard has returned to form on his last two starts when he finished seventh in the US Open and lost a playoff in the BMW International. He has the pedigree to do well this week but one feels his putting problems may let him down again.
The 19-year-old Ishikawa doesn’t look like he can trouble the big guns in this 3-ball which is all about Donald and Garcia.
Tip: Donald @ 95/100 with Unibet.com
2.10pm Westwood/Stricker/Schwartzel
Without doubt this is the best 3-ball of the opening rounds with all three player’s strong contenders for outright glory. Westwood will have all the public support as he looks to win his first major but the value may lie in taking on the Englishman. Stricker has won two of his last three starts whilst Schwartzel is the reigning US Masters champion.
The South African at 33/10 represents a good bet to win this 3-ball and mount a serious challenge for outright glory. At 26, he has won seven European Tour titles and has the complete game – driving and putting – to win
Tip: Charl Schwartzel @ 33/10 with Unibet.com
2.21pm Oosthuizen/Kaymer/Mickelson
South African Oosthuizen stunned world golf last year when he won the Open by seven shots. At 250/1 he proved a great winner for the bookmakers. A repeat seems unlikely this year given his recent form on both the European and PGA tour.
Mickelson admits this is the major he finds the most difficult and has only finished in the top ten once on 17 starts, so despite his obvious class I think it is best to swerve the American.
Kaymer has the perfect game for the Open with a low ball flight and the German was world No.1 for much of last year.
Tip: Kaymer @ 14/10 with Unibet.com
