World number one, Tiger Woods, will tee off at St Andrews a little after 9am on Thursday morning, bidding to become the Open Golf champion at the home of golf for a third consecutive time. The Bookmakers have reported plenty of money for him ahead of the tournament too, with Paddy Power one of a number who have Woods favourite with odds of 11/2, but they are also reporting plenty of money for players such as Rory McIlroy and Lee Westwood as well..
Open Golf Championship LIVE on BBC from Thursday through to Sunday
Woods of course comes to the ‘Old Course’ this week on the back of a season, where he has played only few events and where in the main he has played poorly. However, it is the ‘Major’ tournaments so far this year where he has found some form, he was 4th in the US Masters in April, behind Phil Mickelson and was tied 4th in the US Open last month, behind Northern Ireland’s, Graeme McDowell. This is form we believe that should not be overlooked, particularly with the Open this year at St Andrews, where in the past, Tiger has dominated and where this year he looks for his hat trick of wins.
Open Golf Championship Odds Comparison
In actual fact the Open has never been more open than it is this year for a long time. If Woods cannot win, then who else could come to St Andrews and claim the title. As already reported, Rory McIlroy has been well supported in the market and looks likely to start the tournament either second or third favourite. He currently has odds of 17/1, while Lee Westwood, who may well be carrying a leg injury, is quoted at 16/1.

It often pays golf punters to check out those players, who play well at St Andrews in a bid to find the likely winner, In 2005, Woods led from start to finish and ended up five shots clear of Colin Montgomerie at the end. ‘Monty’ of course will be playing this week, but he has been woeful form and should noty be considered as a likely winner of this. In fact of those who finished not too far behind Woods in 2005, only Retief Goosen of South Africa, would be playing at a level where he might go close. Goosen was tied 5th last time and has odds of 45/1 from Paddy Power.
Although no wins since claiming the USPGA Championship in 2008, Ireland’s Padraig Harrington, a two time winner of the British Open, usually plays very well at St Andrews. He tied for 20th place here in 2000 but was forced to miss the tournament in 2005 due to injury. Harrington, has been showing some excellent form just lately, with five top ten finishes in his last ten events and he would be a player, we think, to monitor very closely this week. He currently has odds of 18/1 with paddy power.
