Lee Westwood will look to end his long wait for a major title when he heads the betting for the US Open at the Congressional Country Club in Maryland this week. Westwood boasts a decent record in the US Open and can be backed at 11/1 in the betting with Paddy Power, while Luke Donald and Phil Mickelson are also well supported for the event which gets underway on Thursday.
Westwood has picked up three top ten finishes in eleven appearances at the US Open, including a tied third in 2008. He tied for 19th when the Open was last held at Congressional back in 1997 and the world number two boasts the impressive stat of having finished in the top 25 in all majors since the 2009 Masters. Westwood arrives in Maryland with six consecutive top 15 finishes on the tour to his name but a tied 11th in the St Jude Classic and his short price makes him a difficult man to back.
Luke Donald arrives as the form man on the planet with top ten finishes in his last ten events, including wins in the BMW PGA Championship and WGC Accenture Match Play. However, the world number one's record at the US Open is poor as he has never finished in the top ten and while he should be in the mix, we fancy a home favourite at the same price could be the way to go.
Unlike the two British hopes, home favourite Phil Mickelson is a four time major winner and he boasts a formidable US Open record - he has finished in the top ten on nine occasions and has been runner up five times. The US Open titled has eluded him so far but he could put that right this week. Despite rumours of his demise it is worth remembering he was tied fourth at the Open last year, recently won the Houston Open and his arch rival Tiger Woods is absent through injury.
'Lefty' has a point to prove and he could be worth a look at 14/1 in the betting with PaddyPower.com, while a younger contender could come in the form of Rory McIlroy (18/1).
The Northern Irishman has a point to prove after he blew the US Masters in April when four shots clear. Since Augusta he has notched four top fifteens in five events and despite his Masters meltdown he is a man for the big occasion having made appearances in the top fifteen in his last three majors.
2010 Race To Dubai winner Martin Kaymer has had a less successful 2011 and that is mirrored in the betting where he is a 28/1 punt. The German was tied eighth last year before going on to win the USPGA Championship and he appears to be moving back into form with four top 25's in six events.
Players Championship winner KJ Choi looks well worth an each way punt at 33/1 with Paddy Power, particularly as the world number 16 was a winner at the Congressional Country Club when the AT&T National was played there in 2007.
Finally, defending US Open champion Graeme McDowell is priced 40/1 after a tough year for him, although we fancy one of the men with a point to prove could take the title this year, with Phil Mickelson the pick ahead of Rory McIlroy.
