Paul Casey Looks To Defy the Odds and win Verizon Heritage Golf Championship

World ranked number 6, Jim Furyk , heads the antepost betting for the upcoming Verizon Heritage Golf Championship this week at Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. Furyk has odds of 14/1 with Ladbrokes despite the fact that he comes into the tournament after missing the cut last week in the Masters and actually missed the cut in this tournament last year. Furyk did win the Transitions Open three weeks ago however and overall has been in good form this year so far.

Leading the European challenge this week is WGC Matchplay champion, Ian Poulter, who played extremely well for a long time at Augusta last week and Paul Casey, who is ranked 7th in the World Rankings, needs to recapture his good form after missing the cut at Augusta last week. Casey has enjoyed five top ten finishes from eight tournaments so far this season and is at 20/1 in the betting to win this week, while Poulter is 25/1.

Defending champion is American, Brian Gay, who broke the tournament record last year when winning with a score of -20 under par. He followed up that win a few weeks later by taking the St Judes Classic, but since then however he has gone 24 tournaments with only one top ten finish and has missed the cut in his last two tournaments. It is hardly form that could be supported by a punter, but nonetheless, Gay is a 33/1 betting option with ladbrokes.

Although having dropped down to 181 in the World Rankings, American Ryder Cup star, Boo Weekly is not a player to ignore in this tournament, he won back to back Verizon’s in 2008 and 2007 and finished in a tie for 13th last year. He might be a worthwhile outsider to consider backing each way, particularly with the very attractive odds of 40/1 with Ladbrokes.

For our money however, we are going to go for American, Matt Kuchar, who has been ‘knocking on the door’ for some time this season. He played well at the Masters last week, finishing in a tie for 24th, but before that he enjoyed two top ten finishes in the Shell Houston and the WGC-CA World Championship. He has also finished second in the Bob Hope Classic and third in the SBS Championship earlier this year; Kuchar has odds of 25/1.
