Maybank Malaysian Open Odds: Martin Kaymer heads the betting despite Masters misery

Click here for the latest odds and betting preview for the 2012 Maybank Malaysian Open.

After the drama of the US Masters last week the European Tour moves on to the Maybank Malaysian Open, which signals the start of the 'Asian Swing'. There is a stronger than usual lineup at the Kuala Lumpur Golf and Country Club on Thursday as Masters Champion Charl Schwartzel takes on Rory McIlroy again, while world number one Martin Kaymer is 7/1 favourite with Victor Chandler.

McIlroy will be keen to 'get back on the horse' after his horror show on the final day of the Masters. The Northern Irishman was four shots clear heading into the final day at Augusta before he hit an 80 to end a distant fifteenth. Backers will be concerned that the pressure and tension of the previous week might have taken a bit too much out of him to be a contender. He is available at industry best price odds of 10/1 with Victor Chandler though and after finishing in the top ten three times in seven events in 2011 there would be no better way to get over Augusta than with a win.

Charl Schwartzel was the biggest beneficiary of McIlroy's 'meltdown' at Augusta as he stormed up the leaderboard to finish 14 under par and claim his first major title. The South African has often saved his best for home soil so the Masters win came as a surprise, although the Joburg Open winner has been a picture of consistency this season - finishing in the top 25 five times on the European Tour, including three top tens. As with McIlroy the only concern will be the fatigue factor and how much the exertions of the past week have taken out of him, with VCbet pricing him at odds of 14/1.

One man who certainly shouldn't be fatigued is world number one and PGA Championship winner Martin Kaymer. The German missed the cut at Augusta for a fourth consecutive year as he continued his own Masters misery. He is 7/1 favourite this week to take the $450,000 winner's cheque home, although it is hard to back him at single figure odds he has only one top ten from six appearances this year.

British Open champion Louis Oosthuizen is also competing this week after missing the cut at Augusta and the Africa Open winner could be one who has the tools to take advantage of the weaker field away from the 'big three'. He is available at a tempting 18/1 with Victor Chandler.com.

Away from the big names of the tour, there are plenty of familiar faces to the Malaysian Open in attendance, not least Thongchai Jaidee. The Thai makes returns to the tour after two months out with a back injury and the two time Malaysian Open winner, in 2004 and 2005, can be backed at odds of 22/1.

Defending champion Seung-Yul Noh is available at odds of 25/1 on a course he clearly relishes. He has only one top ten in six appearances this year though and it may be worth taking a look at a man in form this week.

Welshman Rhys Davies certainly fits that bill after finishing runner up in the recent Trophee Hassan II and after finishing tied third in the Malaysian Open last year we fancy he could be a decent each way punt. Davies finished 18th in last year's Race To Dubai and with a fine record on the Asian Swing we fancy he could be worth backing at odds of 28/1 this week.
