The second PGA tour event of the season gets underway on Thursday and it may be lacking the stellar names like Mickelson and Woods but there is still plenty of quality on display. Steve Stricker heads the betting for the Sony Open in Hawaii at the Waialae Country Club and he is currently at odds of 8/1 with Victor Chandler, but he is sure to face plenty of competition, not least from Ernie Els, for the $5.5 million prize purse event.
Stricker has an impressive record at Waialae where he has finished in the top four in three of the last four years and he looks in good form to be near the top of the leaderboard again. He was joint leader after the first three days at last week's Hyundai Tournament of Champions but fell away on the fourth day to finish tied fourth and he will be keen to rectify that this week. Stricker can be backed to be a fast starter again this week at odds of 16/1 to be the outright leader after the first day.
Within the field this week there is a real mixture of youth and experience with 35 rookies due to take part, but it should be the experienced pros that come out on top here as the windy conditions at Honolulu can cause havoc. One man that most definitely fits into the 'experienced' category is Ernie Els and the big South African is a master of windy conditions. He looks great value at industry best priced odds of 14/1 with VictorChandler.com, and in the last seven years at the PGA Tour's Sony Open he has won twice (in 2003 and 2004), came second once, third once, and fifth once. He was twelfth last year and came tied seventeenth in last week's Tournament of Champions, but his experience of the course and with winds of up to 30mph forecast he could be well worth a look.
Elsewhere, last year's winner Ryan Palmer is long odds to retain his title at 50/1 with VCBet, although he did show signs of a return to form in finishing tied fifteenth last week. He defeated Robert Allenby last year thanks to a final round 66, and Allenby himself is tempting odds of 25/1 or you could go for him to be top Australian at 3/1 with VC Bet as he has finished in the top 10 in three of the last five Sony Opens.
Hyundai Tournament of Champions winner Jonathan Byrd is at odds of 33/1 this week and he will do well to repeat his tournament winning feat, but looks decent at odds of 11/4 to produce a top ten finish and continue a good run of form. While 2009 winner Zach Johnson is 30/1 with Victor Chandler to be the outright winner but he looks good value at odds of 6/1 to produce a top five finish.
With Dustin Johnson missing after returning home this week due to family matters, much will depend on how the players cope with the weather conditions in Hawaii and an industry best priced Ernie Els could well be the man to beat.
