The bookmakers are dangling a carrot at this week's PGA Championship at Whistling Straits with Paddy Power offering odds of 16/1 about Tiger Woods to bounce back from his worst ever tournament as a professional last week at the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational. Many backers thought Woods price of 9/2 pre-tournament last week was too big as there had been glimpses of a return to form off the tee and the world number one was returning to his old Scotty Cameron putter. However, things didn't work out well for Woods, who looked a shadow of his former self finishing near last over the four days and this week we find him at four-times the odds at 16/1, his biggest price since becoming world number one many moons ago. So why would we tip him this week, well, not purely because of the price. Woods demeanor appears to be more relaxed this week judging by the interviews and on-course footage and there is a school of thought that his private life is sorting itself out. Tiger has also been at the course all week, working on his game and at 16/1, it's just too big a price, even if he regains the kind of form that saw him finish fourth at this year's Masters and US Open.

Padraig Harrington won this event two years ago and the Irishman followed up a second place at the Irish Open with a top ten finish last week at the WGC, without really playing that well. Signs are that Harrington is making a long awaited return to form and will have extra incentive to do well this week to ensure he gets a place in the European Ryder Cup team. If Harrington can make the required tweaks to his long game this week, he has the scrambling talent and putting game to do well at this tough track on Lake Michigan and at 20/1 he is worth a punt.
Retief Goosen performed well in last week's WGC-Bridgestone Invitational, finishing tied third. The South African carded a final round 72 despite triple-bogeying the first hole and one wonders whether the Goose is that far off another big win in the States. Goosen has had a consistent season and as a dual US Open winner he has the experience in this kind of arena. At odds of 35/1 he's a definite each-way shout, especially with Paddy Power paying a quarter the odds on the first six places.
For some home interest, Ross Fisher stands out at 50/1, with the Englishman returning to form recently winning the Irish Open a fortnight ago. Fisher followed this up with a decent display in Ohio last week (T46) and had a top twenty finish in this event last year. Fisher's strength is his driving, he is exceptionally long and straight off the tee, something that is imperative around this 7,500 yard track. He's been working hard on his putting which came to fruition in Ireland and with new caddie Phil 'Wobbly' Morbey on the bag, he has the experience to keep Fisher on the straight and narrow.
At longer odds, we've picked out a couple of wiley old fellas at big prices. We tipped up Miguel Angel Jimenez last week at a big price and although the Spaniard faded on the final day, he still finished tied 22nd in a top quality field, defying his long odds. Jimenez is a dual winner on the Race to Dubai tour this season and holds the course record at Whistling Straits from the last time the PGA Championship was held here in 2004. At 125/1 with PaddyPower this week, he's definitely one we'll be sticking with. Another 125/1 shot is Justin Leonard. The American has had his problems this year but there were signs of a return to top form at last week's Bridgestone Invitational, falling away on the last day but still registering a top 25 finish. Leonard was runner up here losing to Vijay Singh in a play-off six years ago and we're hoping a return to a course he likes will make a mockery of his price.
