The last major of the year, the PGA Championship takes place this week at the Highlands Course at Atlanta Athletic Club. Host of this event in 2001, the course has gone through significant renovations since then and power is now key. Long-hitters will do well here but they will also have to be accurate as severe rough and punishing water hazards await those wayward off the tee.
Rory McIlroy is favourite with the bookmakers this week and he can be backed at 11/1 with Unibet. With his superb ball-striking ability, McIloy should be very comfortable getting around this course and will be confident of posting some low rounds.
After his slump in form after the US Open with disappointing performances at Royal St. George and the Irish Open, McIlroy got back into his groove last week at Firestone where he was tied-sixth at the Bridgestone Invitational. The young Northern Irishman knows these American courses suit his game better and that is why he is moving over as of next year to play on the PGA Tour. The only thing holding McIlroy back is his putting and if he can’t get it hot like he did at Congressional in June, he might just fall short this week.
The top-two in the world sit next in the market, both at 14/1 for the victory. World No.1 Luke Donald got back into contention with a tied-2nd at Firestone but he hasn’t produced good performances at the last two majors, missing the cut at both the US and British Open, and his distance off the tee might hamper him here. World No.2 Lee Westwood is coming off the back of a nice 65 to close out the Bridgestone Invitational and he always seems to put in a strong showing in the majors these days.
Jason Day at 24/1 with Unibet is definitely one to consider this week in Atlanta. The 23-year-old Australian is having a terrific season and he has already had runner-up finishes at both the Masters and the US Open. Day is also coming off the back of a 4th place at Firestone which added to his eight top-10 finishes from 16 events this year.
Steve Striker and Dustin Johnson are two other players who are priced at 24/1 that will do well. Striker has been in great form the last few weeks with a couple of victories and has a well-balanced game to put in some good rounds here, while Johnson is one of the longest players off the tee on the PGA Tour and is capable of getting himself into contention for a major on Sunday. Looking to some outside bets this week, David Toms at 54/1 is very interesting. He was champion here in 2001 and is having a resurgence in form this season. He is also coming off the back of a top-10 finish at Firestone where he carded four rounds in their 60s.
Webb Simpson at 79/1 is another one to look at as he has shown great consistency all season. In his last six starts he has had top-20 finishes which include a tied-14th and tied-16th at the US and British Opens.
Tip #1: Back Rory McIlroy at 11/1 with Unibet.
Tip #2: Back Jason Day at 24/1 with Unibet.
Tip #3: Back Webb Simpson at 79/1 with Unibet.
