The players on the PGA Tour face the hardship of remaining in Hawaii for this week's Sony Open at the Waialae Country Club in Honolulu. It is the first full-field event of the season and there are a host of former winners competing for the $5.5m prize purse, with Steve Stricker 7/1 favourite to win his second event of 2012 according to Boylesports.
Stricker justified ante-post favouritism last week as he claimed the Tournament of Champions in Hawaii as he once again got a season off to a flying start. Stricker will face a much bigger test on this week's demanding Waialae course, although he knows his way around after finishing in the top ten in four of his last five appearances here, including a tied third in 2010.
It is a big ask to claim back-to-back tournament wins on the PGA Tour and it could be worth looking around for a little more value in the betting. Webb Simpson is second favourite at an industry best priced 12/1 with Boyles and he continued where he left off last season when finishing tied third last week. Simpson was the surprise package on the tour in 2011, although his record in the Sony Open is nothing to write home about as he has made very little impression here since finishing tied ninth in 2009.
Zach Johnson's game though is ideally suited to this Hawaiian course and his big hitting style continues to make him popular the world over. Johnson is a former winner of this event after he took the title in 2009 and he will be looking to build on his runner-up spot from his last outing at the Chevron World Challenge last month, with Boyles pricing him 14/1.
Also at 14/1 in the betting with Boylesports.com is KJ Choi and the 2008 Sony Open winner could be worth a look. Choi arrives in form after finishing in the top-ten eight times in 2011 and he started 2012 with a tied fifth at the Tournament of Champions. His consistent style ensures that he is well suited to the course as is shown by his four top fifteen finishes here and he arrives on the back of a stunning final round of 65 on Monday which should stand him in great stead for a tilt at the title this week.
Elsewhere, Charles Howell III (28/1) will bid to continue his record of never missing the cut in ten appearances at the Sony Open, during which time he has finished in the top five on five occasions. Rory Sabbatini (30/1) is another with a fine record at this course as he has finished in the top fifteen here on four occasions, including two runner-up finishes.
Steve Marino knows all about being a runner-up here after he finished second to Mark Wilson (40/1) last year. Marino lost out by just two shots as he furthered his reputation at this course and he could well be worth a look at 40/1 in the betting with Boylesports. Marino has the best single round average (67.42) of any player from the last four renewals of this event and his last three appearances have yielded fourth, seventh and second place finishes.
