The European Tour remains in South Africa for the Joburg Open on Thursday and the latest odds are dominated by home-grown players. It was a good week for backing favourites last week as Steve Stricker did the business on the PGA Tour and Louis Oosthuizen won the opening Race To Dubai event, with Charl Schwartzel looking to make it three in a row for favourite backers at a best priced 7/2 with Ladbrokes this week.
Schwartzel is the two-time defending champion of the Joburg Open and he has dominated the East and West courses at the Royal Johannesburg and Kensington Golf Club in recent years. The South African averages 67.55 from 20 rounds there and fired a course record 61 on his way to a winning 19 under par score of 265 last year. The US Masters champion beat Garth Mulroy by four shots and he could well make a winning start to his 2012 campaign after finishing 2011 with fifth place finishes at the WGC-HSBC and Dubai World Championship.
Louis Oosthuizen has opted to take a week off but there are still a host of South African players at the head of the odds behind Schwartzel. Two-time US Open winner Retief Goosen has shown signs of returning to form and he can be backed at 10/1. Goosen loves playing on his home turf and was third at the African Open last week as he continues his search for a first European Tour win since 2007.
Goosen's fellow countryman Thomas Aiken (16/1) will want to do well in his home city and he has proven to be a consistent performer in the Race To Dubai, although he fell away to fourteenth after starting strongly last week.
Jaco Van Zyl secured fourth place last week to go with his tied third at the Alfred Dunhill Championship and he has now notched three top-tens in his last six European Tour starts, with Ladbrokes pricing him 16/1.
Meanwhile, Alfred Dunhill winner Garth Mulroy secured his own top ten at the African Open last week and the two-time Joburg Open runner-up - in 2008 and 2011 - will be looking to go one better from odds of 20/1 this week.
Mulroy finished behind Richard Sterne in 2008 and Sterne could be worth an each-way look at 25/1 with Ladbrokes in Joburg. Sterne made his return to golf last week after a year out with a back injury and he notched a hugely impressive sixth place, seven shots behind Oosthuizen.
Another 25/1 punt with Ladbrokes.com should provide some interest as well, although it is not one of the home contingent this time. Englishman Danny Willett averages 68.50 from three visits to the Joburg Open, including two fourth place finishes. Willett clearly has a fine grasp of the East and West courses and he will be looking to find a bit more consistency to his game after he went 19 under par after three days at the Africa Open last week, only to shoot a 73 on the last day to finish seventh.
