Tiger Woods remains on top the World Golf Rankings despite his worst ever 4 round, tournament total, recorded at the Bridgestone Invitational last weekend. Woods completed the four rounds in 18 over par a full 30 shots behind winner, Hunter Mahan. However, by virtue of Phil Mickelson also having a poor tournament and an injury to England’s Lee Westwood, Woods survived at the top, where he has been for the past 280 weeks.

Nonetheless, the fourteen time Major champion clearly has problems, which if anything seem to be getting worse making it unlikely that golf fans or punters will not see him return to his best until he has taken a long break away from golf and the international spotlight. It is surprising therefore to see the Bookmakers have him as second favourite to win this week’s PGA Championship, with odds of 14/1 from Paddy Power, which quite frankly are laughable on his current form. Favourite at 12/1 is World number 2, Phil Mickelson, winner of this tournament in 2005 and winner of this year’s US Masters. Mickelson of course could go to the top spot in the rankings with a top performance here and a poor showing from Woods.

Wood’s form is also a massive headache for US Ryder Cup captain, Corey Pavin, who, should he want Woods in his team, will almost certainly have to select him on the wildcard basis as he has now dropped to tenth place in the automatic rankings. However, is it likely that seasoned professional, Pavin would select Woods on current form? Or will he ignore him with the thoughts in mind that USA won without Woods in 2008. The honourable thing to do of course would be for Woods to inform Pavin of his unavailability but perhaps he will wait to do this until after the PGA Championship this week. Woods in fact is odds on at around 2/5 with Betfair to be selected, which we would find hard to take, unless his undoubted brilliance comes shining through at Whistling Straits this week.
