Current World number three and reigning WGC CA Champion, Phil Mickelson has been installed as the 17/2 favourite with Boylesports to repeat his 2009 success and claim the highly prestigious WGC-CA Championship, title for the second time. The event which has been running since 1999, will be screened live for four nights, starting from this Thursday, 11 March at 1900 on Sky Sports.
Mickelson did not play at last week’s Honda Classic, nor did he play in the WGC Matchplay a couple of weeks ago, but he is reported as fresh and well up to achieving his first win of this new year.
In fact nine out of the top ten players in the world will line up with 58 other top ranked players at the Doral-Blue Monster Course in Florida this week. The only one missing will be six time winner, Tiger Woods, but even without him, the tournament promises to be an absolute cracker.
The European challenge should be exceptionally strong once again, with Ian Poulter, winner of the first 2010 WGC event, the Matchplay, heavily fancied to do well again in this. Others who will undoubtedly feature will be Paul Casey, runner up to Poulter in the WGC Matchplay and who came with a late charge last week in the Honda Classic to finish in a tie for fourth behind winner Camilo Villegas. Poulter is currently an exceptional 25/1 to win, while Casey is 15/1, both with odds supplied by Boylesports
Along with Casey, Villegas can be said to be one of the real form players ahead of the event. Having won the Honda Classic last week by five strokes and finishing third in the WGC Matchplay a fortnight before, he could be the one to back for this. He was also fifth in this in 2009 and has been made 4th favourite to win this week, with odds of 16/1.

Clearly with such a strong field and with so many of the top players showing good form, it is not easy to select a winner. Only Woods has ever won this tournament more than once, which could suggest that a new name will appear on the trophy. We therefore are going to proffer Lee Westwood as a man who could go very close this week. Apart from in Abu Dhabi, Westwood has played really well in 2010, enjoying three top ten finishes in his last four events and in the other he tied for 17th in the WGC Matchplay. Westwood is fully justified as the current world number four and has the perfect game, if not the track record for this course. We think he will be well worth backing at 20/1 each way.
