Red Hot Matsuyama To Land The US PGA Championship At Quail Hollow

The fourth and final major of the year comes from Quail Hollow in North Carolina as the US PGA Championship gets underway on Thursday and we are banking on there being a first-time major winner at a course where power is an advantage...

Tips Hideki Matsuyama (each way)    Best Bet @ 12 / 1 P
Rickie Fowler (each way) @ 18 / 1 P
Phil Mickelson (each way) @ 66 / 1
Tony Finau (each way) @ 100 / 1

The Big Three

Quail Hollow has hosted the PGA Tour's Wells Fargo Championship from 2003 to 2016, with Eagle Point taking over hosting duties this year, and it is a venue that plenty of the players know well, albeit the course has undergone massive renovations during the past twelve months or so as it is now a par-71 that weighs in at a hefty 7,600 yards.

The changes won't concern Rory McIlroy as the two-time US PGA winner has twice won the Wells Fargo Championship (2010 and 2015) and he holds both the course (61) and tournament (267) record scores there.

McIlroy arrives in decent nick as he tied 5th at the WGC Bridgestone Invitational in his first start since changing caddy but he does look very short at 8/1 following a winless campaign.

In contrast, Jordan Spieth (10/1) has been on fire this term and The Open champion is chasing a career Grand Slam this week, albeit his lack of length off the tee could count against him in North Carolina.

Dustin Johnson (12/1) will have no such worries with distance off the tee but his early season run of form has cooled of late and it is worth noting that he has a best of tied 29th to show from three previous visits to Quail Hollow.

A First Time Winner

This week's venue will place a premium on driving distance, finding greens in regulation and par-5 scoring, which brings us to our best bet of the week, the red hot Hideki Matsuyama. The Japanese star ranks 22nd for distance, tied 6th for GIR percentage and tied 7th for par-5 performance on the PGA Tour this year, and he arrives off the back of a second win of the campaign.

Matsuyama was superb when landing the WGC Bridgestone Invitational last week and it augurs well that the past ten winners of the US PGA had finished in the top-22 at Firestone when the Bridgestone was a warm-up for the major. Three of those have won the Firestone and the US PGA back-to-back.

Matsuyama showed when winning four events in five starts towards the back end of 2016 that he is worth backing when hot and he will have learned plenty from his near-miss when tying for 2nd at the US Open recently.
Tip #1: Hideki Matsuyama (each way) @ 12/1 with Betfred (1/4 odds on six places).

Matsuyama and Rickie Fowler are battling for the title of 'best player yet to win a major' but we fancy one of them to break their duck at Quail Hollow, where Fowler won the Wells Fargo in 2012. Fowler has racked up five top-tens in his last seven starts following a 9th place finish at Firestone and the powerful American should be right in the mix this week.
Tip #2: Rickie Fowler (each way) @ 18/1 with Ladbrokes (1/4 odds on six places).

The Long Shots

Quail Hollow is a venue that Phil Mickelson knows well as he is second in the all-time earnings list there after never finishing worse than 35th in the Wells Fargo Championship. He has nine top-tens to his name there and a man who has racked up ten top-25s for the year ranks as each-way value when searching for a first tournament win since his Open success in 2013.
Tip #3: Phil Mickelson (each way) @ 66/1 with Paddy Power (1/5 odds on eight places).

Finally, Tony Finau is massively over-priced at 100/1 as he is a golfer who ticks plenty of boxes, with Finau ranking tied 6th for driving distance, 5th for GIR percentage and 3rd for par-5 performance on the PGA Tour.

The American tied 16th and 28th at Quail Hollow in 2015 and 2016 respectively, while his career-best major performance came courtesy of a top-ten at the 2015 US PGA.

Finau is in the form of his life this year as his tie for 5th at the Canadian Open last time out was his tenth top-25 of the year, as well as his fourth top-five. He could be the man to spring a surprise.
Tip #4: Tony Finau (each way) @ 100/1 with Ladbrokes (1/4 odds on six places).
