Attention turns to the fourth and final major of the season this week as the USPGA Championship gets underway at the Atlanta Athletic Club in Georgia on Thursday. It is the first time the event will be held there since 2001, when David Toms claimed glory and he is a 50/1 shot this week, although it is Rory McIlroy who heads the betting at 9/1 with Boylesports.
McIlroy's record demands respect after he followed up his near miss at the US Masters with a maiden major victory at the US Open. The Northern Irishman has finished tied third in each of the past two USPGAs, although 9/1 looks a little on the short side and there could be better value to be had with Boylesports going 1/4 odds on the first six places.
Lee Westwood is next best in the betting at 12/1 as he continues to fine-tune his putting after finishing tied-ninth at the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational at the weekend. Westwood has finished in the top fourteen and won two events in his last ten outings, although he has a best of tied-third at the USPGA in 2009 and his best chance of a first major win could lie elsewhere.
Luke Donald completes the European dominance at the head of the betting at 14/1 after finishing runner-up at Firestone at the weekend. The Englishman has been criticised of late after his stunning start to the year faltered, although it is well worth noting that he has finished in the top seventeen in three of his last five outings, including a win in the Scottish Open, and he surely cannot be ignored.
The USA will be looking for a first major winner since Phil Mickelson in 2010 and a first USPGA winner since 2007. Four-time USPGA champion Tiger Woods is the shortest priced of the American contingent at 18/1 with Boyles after he finished tied-37th on his first outing in eleven weeks at Firestone.
There was controversy at the weekend though thanks to the comments of Woods' former caddy Steve Williams, who caddied for tournament winner Adam Scott. Scott is available at 20/1 in Georgia this weekend and it will be a test of the Australian as to how he reacts to the controversy.
Meanwhile, 2005 USPGA champion Phil Mickelson looks a good punt to provide some American cheer at 20/1 after he finished runner-up in the British Open and he was second to Toms at the Atlantic Athletic Club in 2001.
Dustin Johnson also looks tempting at 22/1 with Boylesports.com after he finished tied tenth in 2009 and tied fifth last year. In 2010 he led on the final day and would have gone to the play-off but he was judged to have grounded his club in a bunker and was given a two shot penalty. With three top six finishes in his last six outings he is well worth looking out for.
Elsewhere, defending champion Martin Kaymer is 28/1 to retain his title, while Rickie Fowler (25/1) is proving to be a big tournament player after finishing runner up at the WGC-Bridgestone and tied fifth at the British Open.
For an outside punt this week, a look at Fredrik Jacobson could be a worthwhile each-way bet at 80/1 after he finished in the top 16 in his last two majors and in each of his last four outings as he continues to rise up the world rankings.
