The TPC Blue Monster Course at Doral hosts the WGC Cadillac Championship for the fourth time on Thursday as a strong field gathers in Florida. All of the world's top 50 players are in attendance and it is the new world number one Martin Kaymer who is favourite to win this week. The German can be backed at odds of 9/1 with Victor Chandler bookmakers, with Tiger Woods well backed at an industry best of 12/1, but we fancy the look of Graeme McDowell at 14/1 this week after some strong recent showings.
Kaymer finished third last year at Doral in the strokeplay event, which is the second World Golf Championship tournament of the season following on from the WGC-Accenture Matchplay from a few weeks ago. Kaymer finished runner up in the matchplay event as Luke Donald produced some marvellous golf to enhance his reputation as a matchplay golfer and highlight the strength of European golf at the moment as the top four in the world are now all European.
World number four Graeme McDowell has picked up some decent results during 2011 as he looks to build on last year's US Open win, and none was more impressive than his course record equalling 64 in the Honda Classic last week. That final round six under par score launched the Irishman up thirty places in the leaderboard to finish two under par in joint sixth. He also impressed in the final round at Doral last year with a 66 and we fancy the look of him this year at 14/1 with VCBet to add another US title to his resume.
Matchplay winner Luke Donald is available at industry best priced odds of 25/1 with Victor Chandler after following his win up with a one under par, tied tenth finish in last week's Honda Classic. Although fellow European Lee Westwood continues to disappoint as he finished tied 29th and is 20/1 this week.
Of the American contingent, Tiger Woods is well backed at an industry best of 12/1 although it looks difficult to back him at such a short price on current form. He has won the WGC Cadillac six times, with his last win in 2007, but he has failed to spark in 2011 as he works on modifying his stroke and crashed out in the first round of the Matchplay. While 2009 winner Phil Mickelson can be found at odds of 16/1 with Victor Chandler.com, but like Woods he has flattered to deceive this term and is probably best left alone.
Elsewhere, reigning champion and 2004 winner Ernie Els is a 40/1 punt after his 70th place finish in the Honda. While YE Yang is also available at odds of 40/1 after he hit a final round 66 at the Honda to finish just one shot off the winner Rory Sabbatini. A further look at his 2011 statistics shows he has three top ten finishes in his last five tournaments in the USA and he could be well worth a look at odd of 4/1 with VC Bet to finish in the top ten this week.
