The curtain has only just been brought down on the 2010 European Tour season and the players are already back in action as the 2011 Tour gets underway in South Africa this week. The Alfred Dunhill Championship at the scenic Leopard Creek Country Club gets started on Thursday, and it is two South Africans who head the betting with Paddy Power bookmakers.
The event, co-sanctioned by the South African Sunshine Tour, gives a chance for some of the lesser profile players on the tour to shine with the likes of Ernie Els and Retief Goosen not taking part. Charl Schwartzel leads the way as odds on favourite with Paddy Power at 5/1, and he has an excellent record at the Alfred Dunhill Championship on home soil. He won the event in 2004, and was runner up in 2006, 2007 and 2010. He had an excellent 2010 European Tour season, eventually finishing eighth in the Race To Dubai, and he was unfortunate to lose out to Pablo Martin at Leopard Creek here last year.
South Africans Schwartzel and Louis Oosthuizen are the only two players from the world's top 100 playing in this tournament and should be confident of getting their season off to a flying start with a win. Oosthuizen is at odds of 11/1 to win the tournament with paddypower.com, and the man who produced a sensational win in claiming The Open crown at St Andrews in 2010 is looking for a first professional win in his home country. He finished second here in 2005 but has missed the cut four times since which doesn't bode well, but after finishing tenth in the Race To Dubai he should be confident of ending that barren run.
The 2010 Alfred Dunhill Championship was won by the Spaniard Pablo Martin, who held off the challenge of Charl Schwartzel quite brilliantly. He carded a sensational second round 63 last year, before following it up with a final round of 69 to keep Schwartzel at bay. Martin is 25/1 to be the first man to retain his title here with Paddy Power.
Elsewhere, the relatively unknown Englishman Robert Rock has an excellent record at the Alfred Dunhill Championship. Rock finished fourth in 2010 and tied second in 2009, and he looks good value at odds of 8/1 with paddypower.com to finish this tournament as the Top Great Britain and Ireland player. Alternatively he is industry best priced odds of 5/2 to claim a top 10 finish once again, and he is at shortening odds of 28/1 with Paddy Power to claim his first ever European Tour win.
