There will be plenty of players who will be using this John Deere Classic as a warm up for the forthcoming British Open Golf Championship in two weeks time. The Tournament which takes place at the Deere Run course in Silvis, Illinois has always been regarded as an ‘Open’ warm up, which is why there is always a strong field. This year the betting is headed by world number four and defending champion, Steve Stricker, already a winner on tour this year. Stricker is 14/1 to win with Ladbrokes, while next best in the betting is former US Masters champion, Zach Johnson.
John Deere Classic LIVE in Sky Sports 3 from Thursday 8th July until 11th July
Stricker has been a model of consistency so far this year, he has yet to miss a cut and in addition to his win in the Northern Trust Open, he has had five other finishes in the top twenty. He will be wary however of the danger that second favourite, Johnson poses.
Johnson finished tied Runner Up behind Stricker in 2009 and really enjoys this course and comes to the tournament having had a win ‘under his belt’ already this season. Johnson won the Crowne Plaza Invitational a few weeks ago, a win which launched him back into the world’s top 20.
John Deere Classic Odds Comparison
Players Championship winner, Tim Clark will also be a major contender to win this event. The South African finished in a creditable tie for 12th place at the US Open a fortnight ago and looked in great form. At 16/1 with ladbrokes we think he could be the pick to win this week.
Other players who stand out include, 2008 John Deere winner, Kenny Perry, who is well overdue a return to the form that gave him five tour wins between June 2008 and June 2009. The veteran American has yet to spark this year but it should be noted that he keeps making the cuts and is not that far away from being a contender once again. With odds of 33/1 he would be our Each Way suggestion, although, KJ Choi at 20/1 is another who should feature regularly on this week’s Leaderboard.
