Thursday was Australia Day at the Firestone Golf and Country Club in Akron, Ohio, as Adam Scott and Jason Day stole a march on the field in the first day of the WGC Bridgestone Invitational. Jason Day set the pace by shooting a seven under par 63 on Thursday morning but that score was usurped by fellow countryman Scott who shot a course record equalling 62 in the afternoon to lead the field by one shot going into Friday's second round. As a result, the bookmakers have clipped Scott into 4/1 favourite in-running, with Paddy Power making Jason Day their second favourite at odds of 11/2.
Scott, with Tiger Woods' ex-caddie on the bag Steve Williams, shot a bogey free round with eight birdies, but it was Woods who caught the headlines as he shot a 68 on his long awaited return to competitive golf. Woods struggled with distance control, but scrambled really well to reach the turn in level par. Birdies at ten and eleven got the former world number one going in the right direction before his one blip of the round bogeying fourteen. A 30 foot putt for birdie on sixteen meant that Woods would finish the day tied for eighteenth and Paddy Power reacted by clipping him in to 11/1.
Another American Nick Watney lies third on his own following his first round of 65 and he's 10/1 third favourite as a result. There's a host of players on four under par, with Ryan Moore the shortest to back at 33/1. Amongst these players is Thomas Bjorn who can still be backed at 66/1. The Dane already has a win to his name on the Race to Dubai this season and finished placed in the Open Championship last month. Bjorn may be getting on in years but no doubt inspired by the feat of Darren Clarke, he looks a decent bet at 66/1 each-way to make the frame come Sunday.
Lee Westwood is lloking to warm up for next week's PGA Championship with a good performance this week and a first round 67 will have pleased the world number two. Westwood can be backed in-running at odds of 18/1, whilst Phil Mickelson went quietly about his business on Thursday to equal that score of three under par and is a 20/1 shot with Paddy Power.
Rory McIlroy came back from a poor start to card a two under par round of 68 and remains short in the betting at 16/1, whilst world number one Luke Donald, also on two under par is a rather big looking 28/1.
Thursday wasn't a great day for Darren Clarke who carded a seven over par 77, with this year's Masters winner Charl Schwartzel also struggling with a 74. There's no cut in this World Gold Championship event, but with Adam Scott setting such a hot pace, those on level par or worst reall have to put in a good score in Friday's second round.
4/1 Adam Scott (-8)
11/2 Jason Day (-7)
10/1 Nick Watney (-5)
11/1 Tiger Woods (-2)
16/1 Rory McIlroy (-2)
