This week's Scottish Open gets underway at the Castle Stuart Golf Links for the first time on Thursday and there is a stellar field in attendance. World number one and two Luke Donald and Lee Westwood share favouritism in the betting at 9/1 with Paddy Power, while the likes of Graeme McDowell, Phil Mickelson and Matt Kuchar provide strong opposition.
The links course hosts the Open for the first time as the event moves from the Loch Lomond Links and it is hoped that this course will provide far better preparation for next week's British Open at Royal St George's.
This week's course certainly looks ideally suited to the short game of the in-form Luke Donald as he looks well equipped to deal with the exacting, sloping greens at Castle Stuart. There are few better than Donald on the greens and despite a tied 45th at the US Open, Donald had finished in the top ten in each of his ten previous events.
Donald also won the BMW PGA Championship from Lee Westwood during that time and Westwood will be looking to turn the tables this week. Westwood has been in scintillating form and the 9/1 on offer is an industry best price with Paddy Power. Last year's British Open runner-up achieved the rare feat of winning back-to-back tournaments on the tour when he won the Indonesian and Ballantine's events, and since then he has four consecutive top elevens - including second at the BMW and tied third at the US Open.
We fancy Westwood is the man to beat this week, particularly as many of the top players are trying to find their way back to form. Graeme McDowell (20/1) was Scottish Open winner in 2008 but has missed four cuts in his last nine events, and has just two top fifteens in ten.
Also at 20/1 in the betting is Matt Kuchar, who looks the most consistent of the contenders outside of the top two. Kuchar has finished in the top sixteen in his last four, including a tied second at the Memorial, ahead of his first appearance in Scotland.
Phil Mickelson is industry best priced at 25/1 as he bids to gear up his preparations for next week's British Open. The Houston Open winner tied 54th at the US Open last time out but missed the cut on his last appearance in Scotland.
2001 Scottish Open champion Retief Goosen looks far better value at 28/1 with PaddyPower.com as he arrives in excellent form that includes five consecutive top 25 finishes and two top threes. He looks well worthy of each way consideration and the South African could also be worth a look at Royal St George's next week.
Defending champion Edoardo Molinari is priced 70/1 after failing to pick up a top 25 finish in his last six outings, while Scottish hope Martin Laird (40/1) will bid to become the first Scottish winner since Colin Montgomerie in 1999 - although he has missed two cuts in his last three events.
