Two time champion Steve Stricker is without a doubt the man to beat in the John Deere Classic at the TPC Deere Run in Illinois this week and he is hot favourite in the betting. Stricker has broken records on the way to winning the last two renewals of the event and Ladbrokes price him 6/1 to make it a hat trick, although US Open runner up Jason Day will provide a stiff challenge.
With the British Open just a week away, the John Deere often struggles to attract the very best players from the world of golf as they prefer to prepare across the pond, with the Scottish Open boasting a stellar field this week.
Stricker though wouldn't want to be anywhere else as he has won this event in style twice in the past two years. Last year he broke the tournament record as he finished 26 under par, thanks in large part to a stunning opening round 60. Furthermore, he is 46 under par for his last eight rounds at the TPC Deere Run and can boast an astonishing average score of 65.
It is not only his form in Illinois that is on his side though, as Stricker has finished in the top 20 in his last seven events and was winner of the Memorial Tournament last month. It is difficult to look anywhere else as Stricker bids to match Tiger Woods by being the only player to win an event three years in a row since 1980.
The most likely player to topple Stricker is Jason Day, who arrives in fine fettle. The Australian is available at 12/1 in the betting with Ladbrokes after finishing runner up in the US Open. That was Day's second consecutive runner up spot in a major after his impressive display in the US Masters, and he has now finished in the top ten in five of his last six outings. The world number seven has finished tied 15th in his last two years in the John Deere and looks well set to better that this week.
Next best in the betting is Zach Johnson at 16/1, as the local favourite looks to provide the home fans with some cheer. The Iowa-born player is yet to win a tournament this year but has finished in the top 32 in his last six events and has decent form in this tournament - two consecutive top 25 finishes, including a runner up spot in 2009.
Meanwhile, David Toms won his first PGA Tour event in the 1997 John Deere Classic at Oakwood Country Club, although the 20/1 shot has missed two cuts in his last three outings.
Charles Howell III is also priced 20/1 by Ladbrokes.com and could be worth a look after two consecutive top three finishes in the St Jude and AT&T National, and he has four top 25 appearances in his last five at the TPC Deere Run.
2007 champion Jonathan Byrd is 25/1 after making the cut in all seven appearances in this event and was tied 21st last year, while British Open champion Louis Oosthuizen is priced 33/1. It is a surprise the South African has opted to miss the Scottish Open this year after he took that route for the past two seasons, but all eyes will be on the hat trick seeking Stricker.
