Hyundai Tournament of Champions Golf Odds: Ogilvy favourite to claim hat trick win

The Hyundai Tournament of Champions in Hawaii starts on Thursday and hosts a strong thirty four man field. The first event of the PGA Tour hosts thirty four winners from last year's tour and it is 2009 and 2010 champion Geoff Ogilvy who is favourite to win and make it a hat trick at the Plantation Course in Kapalua, Maui. The Australian is offered at odds of 7/1 by Victor Chandler and his favouritism is unsurprising as this event has been won by an Australian five times in the last seven years.

Ogilvy won the Hyundai Tournament of Champions by one stroke last year and claimed glory in 2008, while fellow countryman Stuart Appleby, who is an outside 22/1 here, won it for three consecutive years in 2004, 2005, and 2006. Ogilvy will hope to emulate that feat as he goes for a hat trick of wins this year and he has been well backed with Victor Chandler clipping in his odds of winning from 8/1 to 7/1. However his form after winning last year was pretty poor by his own admission as his best performance in 2010 majors was a tied 26th at the Masters. He did win the Australian Open before Christmas and came second in the Australian PGA to help improve confidence and he heads to Hawaii in decent nick.

Another man in decent form is Ernie Els who won the South African Open Championship and will be one of few players in the field with match practise under their belt. The 'Big Easy' looks good at odds of 9/1, especially when you consider he won this tournament in 2003 when he produced the tournament record total score of 31 under par. He has achieved six top ten appearances in eight appearances at the Plantation Course and looks really good value with VictorChandler.com.

Outside of the top Graeme McDowell catches the eye as he heads the European contingent after earning the respect of the American public last year by winning the US Open. He is currently at odds of 12/1 with Victor Chandler bookmakers but he is on debut at the Plantation Course and historically debutants don't fare well here and he may be better left alone until later in the season. Fellow European Francesco Molinari had a solid 2010 and will be looking to kick on in 2011. The Italian won the WGC HSBC Champions and claimed ten top-ten finishes last year and his consistent style could serve him well here. He is 9/2 with Victor Chandler to place which is well worth a look, or for a safer bet he is 6/5 to finish in the top 10.

Interestingly it is nine years since an American won the Tournament of Champions and the highly rated Dustin Johnson catches the eye at industry best priced odds of 14/1 with VCBet. He won the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro Am in 2009 and 2010, and lost out in a playoff here to Daniel Chopra in 2008. To win the tournament he is going to have to shrug off the tag of a 'choker' that some have unfairly given him, but with two 13 under pars in his last two appearances he looks well set at odds of 6/1 to be the top American with Victor Chandler.
