The Race to Dubai continues this week and world number one Luke Donald heads the betting as he bids for back to back wins in the Madrid Masters. A relatively new fixture on the European Tour, 2011 is just the fourth running of this tournament which has an impressive roll of honour in it's short life. Luke Donald won here last year as he came to play in Europe to gain points towards the Ryder Cup. Being played later in the year in 2011, Donald is now looking to continue his relentless good form and help secure his first Race to Dubai title. The Englishman heads most betting markets across both sides of the Atlantic when entering a tournament but this week he is a very short 5/1 with Paddy Power.
Donald currently leads the Race to Dubai rankings following nine top ten finishes in eleven outings, including three wins, in the WGC Asscenture World Matchplay, BMW PGA Championship and Barclays Scottish Open. The Englishman was once again in contention in Scotland last week, in the mix on Sunday at St Andrews before slipping to finish ninth. There were signs that the heavy season was beginning to take it's toll on Donald and the 5/1 does look short, even though he should be too strong for this field.
Second in the betting is Swede Peter Hanson at odds of 14/1 with Paddy Power. Hanson currently sits seventeenth in th order of merit but is without a win this season from eighteen events. The Swede fought his way onto the Ryder Cup team last year with two wins on tour but has only been in serious contention on five occassions in 2011. Second in the Colvo Golf Champions at the beginning of the year Hanson also finished ninth in the Dubai Desert Classic. Hanson was fourth at Celtic manor in the Wales Open before his best finish of the season in the US Open where he finished seventh. There was a glimpse of form last week in Scotland where he finished ninth but he's not a player you can back with any real confidence at the prices.
Francesco Molinari is next in the betting at 18/1 with Paddy Power and the Italian returns to the course where he finished third last year. The tournament was played for the first time at the Real Sociedad Hipica Espanola Club de Campo in May last year and Molinari finished three shots off Luke Donald on eighteen under par. Molinari has slipped down the rankings this season after he finished off last year on fire, winning the WGC HSBC Champions in China. The Italian has just four top ten finishes to his name this season and has struggled with the putter. He finished eighth in the Italian Open back in June and his best finish of the year came in the WGC-Cadillac Championship when he came third.
Nicolas Colsaerts is next in the betting at 20/1, the Belgian enjoying his best season on tour with a maiden victory in the China Open in April and a third place finish in the World Matchplay Championship. A top ten finish last week in Scotland and he could be one to watch. Ross Fisher and Matteo Manassero are both available to back at 22/1 but haven't played on this course before, so the 28/1 about Alvaro Quiros looks like a good bet to take. The Spaniard always seems to raise his game in his homeland and was tied for tenth here last year. Quiros has been struggling with injury of late hence the price, but with a win to his name at the beginning fo the season, he knows how to cross the finish line and would be our best bet at 28/1.
