Ross Fisher's win at the Irish Open at the weekend was a timely boost to the Englishman's chances of making his first ever Ryder Cup team. Fisher has had a difficult season after bursting onto the scene in 2009 but his win at Killarney shot him up to the sixth automatic qualifying spot for Colin Montgomerie's European team for Celtic Manor and bookmaker Paddy Power now make Fisher a 1/33 chance of keeping hold of that position by the end of August when the teams are announced.

Padraig Harrington has almost been assured a wildcard pick by Monty if necessary come decision time but the Irishman gave Montgomerie some encouragement in Ireland at the weekend when Harrington finished second behind Fisher. Harrington has struggled since winning three major championships in two years, with excessive tinkering of his swing blamed. Harrington will need a good finish in each of the next two tournaments in America to get an automatic qualification, unless he wins either the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational on Sunday or next week's PGA Championship at Whistling Straits. The Irishman is currently 1/33 to make the Ryder Cup team with Paddy Power so whether he qualifies automatically or has to rely on a wildcard, the Irish bookmaker certainly see him making the team at Celtic Manor.
The final qualifying tournament for Europe's team is the Johnnie Walker Championship at Gleneagles at the end of August, the winner of which can bag £1.4 million. Apart from the two events in America over the next fortnight, the Czech Open on August 19th is the only remaining tournament in the Europe points list, so the next two weeks in America can almost decide the European team. Colin Montgomerie's team are odds on to regain the Harry Vardon Trophy.
Those on the verge of qualifying are Francescor Molinari (1/2) and Miguel Angel Jimenez (4/6), who occupies the last automatic spot in the team currently. The Spaniard has a good recent record in the Bridgestone so a top twenty finish in Ohio should be enough to seal his place and give Monty some experieince to the team. Currently, of the eight players occuping automatic places, just Molinari, Jimenez and German Martin Kaymer, himself a 1/25 shot to make the team are the only players not from the British Isles. With the likes of Justin Rose and Paul Casey, 1/8 and 1/16 respectively likely to be at the forefront of Monty's wildcard picks if they don't play their way into the team in August, it could be a very 'British' looking team indeed.
Of the players who currently don't occupy a qualifying place, Swedish duo Robert Karlsson and Henrik Stenson are both 8/11 to make the team with Paddy Power, whilst Ryder Cup stalwart Sergio Garcia is 11/10. All three prices look very skinny if they all require a wildcard to qualify. Karlsson has the best form of the three, having won in Qatar at the start of the year and performed well in the PGA Championship at Wentworth and the Open Championship last month. Stenson had been slipping down the World Rankings after winning the TPC at Sawgrass in 2009 but a third place finish at St Andrews showed that he could have the capability of playing his way onto the team over the next fortnight. Garcia is having a wretched time of things and the Spaniard could cuase Montgomerie the biggest headache of the team selection. Garcia's form suggests he won't play his way onto the team, so he will have to rely on Montgomerie giving him a wildcard pick. The 11/10 odds suggest this isn't totally out of the question but it would be considered a big risk, despite his excellent Ryder Cup record.
It's looking good for Italian Francesco Molinari to make the Ryder Cup for the first time and his Brother Edoardo is also not completely out of the picture. The older brother Edoardo recently won the Scottish Open and he might be a decent bet at 5/4 to make the team if Monty decides to give him a wildcard on the back of him and his brother winning the World Cup at the end of last year as a team. Edoardo sits just one place behind Luke Donald, who is occupying the fourth spot in the World Points List so could still yet qualify automatically.
Of the bigger priced players looking to get a place on the European team, Welshman Rhys Davies looks the best placed at 7/2 with PaddyPower. The rookie has taken the Race to Dubai by storm this year, winning his first event in Morocco and finishing well placed at Celtic Manor in the Welsh Open. A wildcard pick would certainly be a popular choice for the home support.
