Phil Mickelson and Rory McIlroy are set to renew their battle for the Wells Fargo Championship this week as the tournament at The Quail Hollow Club in North Carolina gets underway on Thursday. Defending champion McIlroy pipped Mickelson to the title last year but Mickelson edges favouritism at odds of 12/1 with Totesport this year.
Mickelson's runner up spot last year continued his fine record in the PGA Tour event as he has now notched up six top twelve finishes in seven appearances at Quail Hollow. However, 'Lefty' has endured an indifferent 2011 and despite winning the Shell Houston Open he was never in contention during his tied 27th at the US Masters last time out, and we fancy McIlroy could just carry the edge again this week.
Tote price McIlroy just a point behind Mickelson at odds of 13/1 and despite his implosion at the US Masters we fancy he could be worth a look. The Northern Irishman appeared to have recovered from his collapse at the Masters by finishing third in the Malaysian Open and the defending champion will look to rediscover his Quail Hollow form of last year - he hit closing rounds of 66 and 62, and racked up 17 birdies and an eagle.
McIlroy has moved up to a career best of world number six after overtaking Tiger Woods and he could move further ahead as Woods is absent with a knee injury this week.
Martin Kaymer also endured a shocker at the Masters as he missed the cut for a fourth consecutive year at Augusta and despite finishing ninth in Malaysia he has failed to impress in 2011, bar a runner up spot at the WGC Matchplay. His only appearance at Quail Hollow brought him an eleventh place finish in 2009 but even at industry best priced odds of 18/1 he looks hard to back on recent form.
WGC-CA winner Nick Watney is next best at odds of 20/1 after finishing tied 20th in the Zurich Classic of New Orleans last week. Watney has five top 25 finishes from six appearances in the Wells Fargo, but has never finished better than eleventh.
Elsewhere, Jim Furyk catches the eye at odds of 25/1 with Totesport.com and the veteran performer could be a decent each way punt or as a bet to place at 13/2. Furyk was Wells Fargo winner in 2006 and a runner up in 2005, and with four top tens in six at Quail Hollow he should be relishing a return to the course. He hasn't finished worse than eleventh in his last three appearances there and has secured top 5 finishes in each of his last four events this year to continue his solid recent form.
Bubba Watson also provides interest at industry best odds of 28//1 after winning in New Orleans last week to move into the world's top ten for the first time. Watson beat Webb Simpson in a play-off and as a runner up in 2009 he could be worth a look to place at 6/1.
The odd suggest we are set for a shootout between Mickelson and McIlroy again as the players gear up for next week's Player's Championship, although the wily Jim Furyk could have a say in the matter.
