Saturday will go down in Ryder Cup history as being one of the longest days of golf, with all twenty-four players making significant contributions and playing in the foursomes. Due to the rain in South Wales on Friday, the Ryder Cup organisers had some making up to do with so many holes of golf missed. This meant, Friday's foursomes that were carried over from Friday night go the day underway in the early Celtic Manor mist, followed by a second session of six foursome matches, followed again by the start of another two foursome matches and the remaining four fourball matches. For golf fans and punters this meant a pretty hectic day of golf and betting, with another day like this in store on Sunday!
The USA officially lead the Ryder Cup by six points to four after the second session and for a short time the Americans had become favourites for the first time in this year's Ryder Cup. Corey Pavin's side touched 5/4 with the bookmakers following the foursomes with bookmakers going odds against Europe winning on home soil. It was squeaky bum time for bookmaker Paddy Power who had already paid out on a Europe win earlier in the week and were now facing the prospect of paying out twice on this year's event. That was before a spirited fightback from the Europeans which left them up in all six matches on the course before darkness fell on the Twenty Ten Course. There's plenty of golf still to be played in the third session of this year's Ryder Cup, but the fact that Paddy Power have gone as short as 2/5 on the home side shows that the bookmakers feel that the momentum is with Colin Montgomerie's men. The USA have been pushed out to 5/2 for Saturday night, with the tie remaining a 10/1 chance.
Lee Westwood and Luke Donald are leading the way for Europe and find themselves four up after nine holes against the unbeaten duo of Tiger Woods and Steve Stricker. Paddy Power make the English pair as short as 1/80 to put a point on the board for Europe and the Americans 15/1. Westwood is unbeaten also this week and with Luke Donald he has a partner who has won five out of five matches in this form of the game.
Rory McIlroy and Graeme McDowell have had mixed fortunes over the first two days but look in control of their match with Hunter Mahan and Zach Johnson. The pair from Northern Ireland let slip a good position in an earlier match with Stewart Cink and Matt Kuchar but find themselves three up after the first eight holes in the remaining foursomes match. The European pair are 1/10 to take the point on Sunday morning, with the Americans 10/1 with Paddy Power.
Of the remaining four matches, Europe have a lead in each of them. All four pairs are odds on to win their respective matches with Paddy Power, but with only one hole between a couple of the matches there's still plenty to play for if you're a USA backer. Ian Poulter and Martin Kaymer are the shortest price of those still out on the course in the fourballs overnight, at odds of 3/10 with Paddy Power. The pair are two up on rookie Rickie Fowler and Phil Mickelson but with only four holes played there's plenty of golf left. Peter Hanson and Miguel Angel Jimenez also find themselves two up after six holes against the rookie pairing of Jeff Overton and Bubba Watson. The young Americans have been a surprise success so far but you begin to wonder if the weeks efforts are beginning to catch up with them.
Europe are one up in the other two matches due to start early on Sunday morning. Padraig Harrington has shrugged off some woeful form in Saturday morning's fourballs to strike up a good partnership with Ross Fisher, the pair edging proceedings with Dustin Johnson and Jim Furyk by one hole on the 8th. Paddy Power make the European pair 4/6 in the betting to go on and convert the point on Sunday morning. The Italian Molinari brothers are also one up, against the tough competitiors Matt Kuchar and Stewart Cink, but can still be backed at 4/5 to serve up another win for Europe.
With six more matches to finish on Sunday morning, it could be another busy day. With heavy rain forecast on Saturday night and all day Sunday it's feasible that the Ryder Cup may run over to Monday. PaddyPower are betting on the correct score, with the Europeans trying to reach fourteen and a halve points for a win whilst the USA just require fourteen to take the Harry Vardon Trophy back on the plane to the States with them. The favourite in the correct score betting is a 14.5-13.5 scoreline which can be backed at odds of 13/2. The same scoreline in Corey Pavin's team's favour is a 7/1 shot.
Whatever the weather, the 38th Ryder Cup has already been a memorable one, with the betting 'two-ing' and 'fro-ing' with ever sinked putt. Many a European supporter will go to bed thinking their side are a good thing at odds of 2/5 but there's sure to be plenty of golf played yet.
